10 search engines for April 2000. See below for Traffick's commentary
on this month's numbers.
SEARCH & SERVICES*
numbers clearly show that Yahoo! is a true portal, offering
users many services and keeping them involved with Yahoo! for
an extended period of time.
is a big surprise, leading the pack with 92.2 page views per unique
user per month. One presumes that the high number of page views
here is related to the playing of various contests and checking
on one's results?
low result for About.com is likely a concern to the company,
but a marketing campaign and a massive site reorganization may
have a significant impact on the number of page views per user
in future reports.
shows somewhat surprising strength. Does some of the user loyalty
have to do with the Blue Mountain greeting cards?
continues to show weakness. Analysts have long been aware that
it is not a very integrated portal, but rather a "multi-brand
holding company." Company management always had the audacity
to claim this as a strength. Perhaps, but if I want to read Wired
News but hate Lycos' email, I might use Hotmail and eventually
forget to read Wired News.
Looksmart's low number shows that while it may be a good
directory, it is ONLY a directory, which makes it a markedly different
company from Yahoo, the true portal.
* Represents an aggregation of commonly owned/branded domain names.
