Media Metrix, the global provider of Internet statistics, has released the top 10 search engines for April 2000. See below for Traffick's commentary on this month's numbers.

  • These numbers clearly show that Yahoo! is a true portal, offering users many services and keeping them involved with Yahoo! for an extended period of time.

  • is a big surprise, leading the pack with 92.2 page views per unique user per month. One presumes that the high number of page views here is related to the playing of various contests and checking on one's results?

  • The low result for is likely a concern to the company, but a marketing campaign and a massive site reorganization may have a significant impact on the number of page views per user in future reports.

  • Excite shows somewhat surprising strength. Does some of the user loyalty have to do with the Blue Mountain greeting cards?

  • Lycos continues to show weakness. Analysts have long been aware that it is not a very integrated portal, but rather a "multi-brand holding company." Company management always had the audacity to claim this as a strength. Perhaps, but if I want to read Wired News but hate Lycos' email, I might use Hotmail and eventually forget to read Wired News.

  • Finally, Looksmart's low number shows that while it may be a good directory, it is ONLY a directory, which makes it a markedly different company from Yahoo, the true portal.

* Represents an aggregation of commonly owned/branded domain names.

Unique Visitors:  The estimated number of total users who visited the Web site once in the given month.  All Unique Visitors are unduplicated (only counted once). 

Sample Size: More than 50,000 individuals throughout the U.S.participate in the Media Metrix sample. 

Average Unique Pages per Visitor in a Month:  The average of the sum of the number of Unique Pages viewed per day over the course of the month by those persons visiting a specific Web site or category, channel or application.
