Hi Jill,
Get and read your email faithfully -- thanks for all of the great information.
I have a question about redirects. I wanted to use a special URL in one of our ads so we could track its effectiveness. I asked our web guy if he could make a redirect and add the name of the ad to the end of our URL like this: www.oursite.com/ad1 -- but it would go to our home page.
I had done this at previous jobs, but he said that it was not a good practice as search engines don't like it.
Can you tell me if this is true or not.
Thanks again,
Kim
Jill's Response
Hi Kim,
Since you're not doing it for the search engines, but to track your ads, it's not a problem at all. Just exclude the tracking URL via your robots.txt file so it doesn't get spidered by the search engines and you should be all set.
For more info on how to use the robots.txt file, you may want to visit
Hope this helps!
