Mirror Sites for Flash

Jill,

Are mirror sites a good idea? My sister had a nice (Flash-based) site created for her. I mentioned to her that the content has to be in HTML or the site will do miserably in terms of natural ranking. The web developer told her he is going to create a mirror site with HTML to deal with the issue of an all-Flash site.

Everything that I understand about SEO tells me that this is silly.

Thanks,

David

Hi David,

It depends on what you (or the developer) actually mean by a mirror site. Not everyone has the same definition.

If he's just going to create an HTML version as a subsection of the same site, and link to it from the Flash section (like "click here for the lo-fi version"), then that would be perfectly fine. I would highly recommend that he do something like that. It will satisfy the needs of those users who may not like Flash or who are surfing with older browsers or devices that might not handle Flash, as well as the search engines. Plus it will also allow her to keep her ego-satisfying Flash site! :-)

Best,

Jill
