With so many different applications/websites popping up each day it's certainly interesting to watch the long-term trend to see which ones can continue to succeed month over month. I thought I'd check out some of Compete's stats for some of the most popular applications to see how they faired last year (in terms of visitors).

Twitter visitors Up over 750% from last year:

FriendFeed visitors Up over 3100% from last year (Note, they launched late Dec/Early Jan 2008):

Facebook visitors Up over 85% from last year:

Digg visitors Up 91% from last year (that surprised me):

Stumbleupon visitors up over 180% from last year:

MySpace visitors Down nearly 10% from last year:

HotorNot.com visitors Down 67% from last year:

Technorati visitors Down 35% from last year:

Bloglines visitors Down 21% from last year:

Friendster visitors Down 11% from last year:

These are very interesting statistics. Impressive with the growth in Twitter. Will be interesting to se how fast Twitter will catch on I Europe.

Facebook is very popular in Denmark, but Twitter, Digg and some of the other social medias are not so widely used yet.

Very interesting ... with all the focus on Twitter, people seem to be forgetting about sites like StumbleUpon (up over 180% from last year) and new sites like Friendster.

With the massive influx of "social media" gurus and similar hucksters flocking to Twitter, it is any wonder that real business interests are able to reach their target audience at all, which is the whole point of "social media" SEM and SEO to begin with.

Friendster is not new its been operating since 2003, I think its more popular here in asia than any other part of the world.

What a great list of statistics. I found it very interesting that digg is still right up there with some of the top dogs. I still can not believe that digg is up higher than facebook. Very interesting stats. Great work!

This tremendous growth in social media has a lot of marketers thinking about how they can leverage these type of sites to drive additional traffic to businesses. Whether purchasing advertising, creating company profiles, getting involved in the community aspect of these sites, it is likely that social media sites will continue to attract more and more businesses.
