/URLwire/ LOS ANGELES, CA USA (--April 23, 2001--) A new search engine using spider technology is "crawling" the net. Located at http://www.Aesop.com, the crawler began crawling in January, 2001 and opened its doors to searchers today after having indexed 2.5 million unique web pages

According to says Mark Joyner, CEO, "With the exception of Yahoo (NAS:YHOO), all of the 8 major Internet search engines are 'spider' type engines, but true spiders are actually quite rare. There are only 10 true spider search engines in existence. Since almost every spider search engine becomes recognized as a major search engine in a short period of time, the release of a new spider search engine is always a pivotal event on the Internet."

The term "spider" refers to any automated technology that captures information from a website and follows links (or "crawls" with "bots") to find more information. AltaVista (NAS:CMGI) and Google are two well known examples. True spider search engines are so rare because the technology required to manage the mountains of data involved is quite complex.

In the upcoming weeks, Aesop.com will also announce new search technology that will change the way searchers find information. "Our slogan is: 'Find it here - faster.' We intend to greatly cut down the amount of time it takes for searchers to find information on the net. We will release the new technology responsible for this in the next few weeks," said Joyner.

"We realize that there are already many search engines in existence, but we believe we can make a significant contribution to the Internet community by offering a new paradigm that will cut down the amount of time it takes searchers to find relevant information," finished Joyner.
