Google CEO Eric Schmidt is in a somewhat steamy situation since calling the internet a "cesspool" and saying "We don't actually want you to be successful. . .The fundamental way to increase your rank is to increase your relevance." Sage takes the cesspool analogy a step farther, saying that Schmidt views himself as the heaven to the internet hell, that it's his job to "cleanse" the internet. What Schmidt fails to realize is that he lives in "hell" and makes his money there, so "Stop being a jerk!" says Sage.

Wow. That is all I can say.

Hey I don't see any reason that you need to tell the Google fellow to stop being a Jerk.

He's just reminding People that his (Google Search's) business is to give People what they are looking for and not just mindlessly diverting traffic to your or my site / Internet Business.

There are many SEO guys who feel that its their right to Show up for what ever keyword they optimize (this involves using the keywords in meta tags and building links with that anchor text) even if they have nothing to offer to the end user / searcher of the keyword.

Now Mr. Schmidt is clearly telling people that Look you need to first be relevant for a particular keyword, than anything else.

Before We ask him to stop being a Jerk, we need to tell over Zealous SEO *Professionals* to stop being a jerk.

An undoing? I doubt it.

I can definitely see where Eric Schmidt is coming from. There is a lot of garbage out there on the web.

Now, cesspool? That's a bit harsh. I would love to see Google cleaning up the web a bit though...

Especially sites where the ONLY purpose is to serve ads. These type of websites provide little to no value to users.

Sage, I for one applaud you for the vidblog about Google and the high and mighty thinking the show.

As for giving people what they want, sorry, when you filter/censor/control what is presented, then that is not what people want, it's what you want them to see.

Great opinion!!!

Thanks all for your thoughtful opinions.

I believe that every company, no matter how great and successful, has weaknesses. There can be issues that could eventually be their undoing.

I feel very strongly that this "us against them" mentality opens up a potential weakness that another engine could exploit.

Thanks for watching!
Sage

Hmm, I am not sure how I feel about this video or the statements made by Eric... but I certainly don't think it's time to claim any "undoing" of Google. Interesting opinion nonetheless.
