Keyword Placement Tutorial
By Yelena Shapiro

There are a few techniques that can help improve your search engine rankings. Most of these techniques have one thing in common - the use of keywords. Choosing appropriate keywords is extremely important. Think about it : keywords are what people will type into a search engine... words that will lead them to your site.

How to choose your keywords
Choosing the right keywords is the first step to better search engine positioning (achieving high rankings). Analyze your business carefully and think of all words that relate to your company or product.

Let's say that you sell puppy food. What words would you search for when looking for the same service or product? Ask your colleagues and friends to do the same thing. This stage is perhaps the most important in your war for the Top 20 search engine position.

  1. Who would need your service?
After you have all the keywords from "dogs" to "top breeders," try this technique. Think about who will use your services, then target them with keywords. For example, people whose dogs are about to have puppies will need puppy food. You can add "dog pregnancy" and "puppy health" to your list.

  2. Include variations of your keywords
People will search for your site using various keywords. Making your site easy to find means including mispeled (we mean misspelled), Capitalized and plural keywords. Always include the longer form of a keyword, so that a search on both, the shorter and the longer version, will lead to your site. For example, use "domestication" instead of "domestic."

  3. Avoid wrong keywords
Do not use "stop words"! Choosing very common words will not work. Avoid overusing words such as "Web" or "Internet". Remember, the more specific your keywords are, the better the chances that people who search for them will actually benefit from your site's content.

Alphabetical priority and its influence
Some smaller engines still use alphabetical hierarchy as a part of their ranking formula. Directories, such as Yahoo! and LookSmart list sites using alphabetical hierarchy. Click here to learn how alphabetical hierarchy is structured and how it should affect your decisions.

Avoid the use of spam
Be careful with your keyword selection. All of your keywords should relate to your site, otherwise you risk being penalized for spam. Don't include "MP3" and "Pokemon" in your list if you sell puppy food. Sure, it will drive up the traffic temporarily, but it can also mean rejection from important search engines.
