Weekly Newsletter - 2004-01-21
If you have trouble viewing this newsletter, a copy is available on the Web:

Hi Everyone!

I've updated the "Conferences & Workshops" section of the newsletter (lower right hand column). This will be a good year for conferences as there are quite a few already planned in a variety of cities and countries.

A few months back sponsored the newsletter to let people know about their free search engine optimization tools. Just become a member, for free, and you can use the various goodies. Now, they are back with SEODoctor - a tool to help you spot any problems you may have on your page. As they point out, a tool can't replace a person when it comes to working on a site. But, a tool like SEODoctor can help you discover potential problems faster and it will make suggestions you may not have considered. It's worth a look.

Have a great week!

Robert Clough

The SEO Doctor Is In - Visit the SEO Doctor at

The SEODoctor is SEO software that can help you quickly spot problems or performance issues that you may easily overlook. It is also designed to score your pages based on the important elements such as the title and content and does not rely too heavily on keyword densities. Although automated SEO tools can save time; nothing replaces the human eye when it comes to search engine optimization and the readability of your pages.

This search engine optimization tool may be the only search engine optimization software you need to perform a search engine readiness check on your pages and improve your positioning.

Discussion Threads of the Week
(Links to search engine forum discussion threads that deal with search engine marketing topics. Each listing provides the topic, the source, and a brief snippet from the discussion.)

Description Meta Tag
Best Practices Forums
"...even though some engines do not use or index the Meta Description tag, I ALWAYS include a well written description, regardless of what one search engine does or does not do..."

High Rankings Forum
"Does anyone have any links or articles about semantics and how Google and other search engines are measuring its importance?"

Good Sites Gone Bad
Jim World
"There's a lot of catch twenty-two issues in trying to clean up the mess. I'm getting to the point where I'm tempted to not take on any more clients that have had previous SEO work done to their site unless they are willing to start fresh."

Cookies And Javascript
High Rankings Forum
"Are crawlers basically disabling both JavaScript and Cookies? I am pretty sure that crawlers do not read JavaScript at all, but how about Cookies?"

Inktomi ranking algo questions
Jim World
"Inktomi has 2 sets of spiders - a PFI spider and a "natural" spider. The natural spider crawls via incoming links, the PFI spider crawls pages submitted. Provided your site is well linked to, it will get crawled fully and for free - but it takes time. PFI is instant gratification. The PFI spider only crawls the pages paid for, the natural spider crawls all pages found."

Fahrner Image Replacement Technique, Can this hurt or help SEO?
High Rankings Forum
"Because I had not heard of this technique before I wanted to ask around to see what others thought. From what I've read and understand, this technique shouldn't hurt him nor help him. What do y'all think?"

Yahoo Changing..So Is $299 Annual Still worth it?
Jim World
"Personally, I feel this way about being Yahoo!'s Directory: If you're competitors are there, then you should be there. If you think that being listed in Yahoo!'s Directory is some 'magic pill' that will skyrocket you to the top of the rankings on Google (or any other search engine for that matter) then you're mistaken."
