Source: About Web Search 2004-02-06
The last six months has seen a rise in talk of dayparting in regards to pay-per-click campaigns, but many Web site owners still don't have a solid grasp on what dayparting is and how it works. Get an overview of what dayparting is and how it works in this featured article.

PPC for Beginners Part Two
Source: About Web Search 2004-02-05
Two of the most important factors of any Pay Per Click (PPC) campaign are creating successful ads and deciding how much to pay per click. There are many PPC options out there to choose from, I am going to focus on the two most popular, Google AdWords and Overture.'s PPC Play

Discussion Threads of the Week
(Links to search engine forum discussion threads that deal with search engine marketing topics. Each listing provides the topic, the source, and a brief snippet from the discussion.)

Caissa - Cre8asite Example of the Year 2003
Cre8asite Forums
"This is a success story, but more than that, this is a good example of how a small business can make the most use of a forum such as Cre8asite, and use it to make the most out of their business."

An "s" Makes This Much Of A Difference?
High Rankings Forum
"I've been testing for a few months over a wide range of terms and it appears as if Google may be using the invisible buttons that Danny talked about a while ago. Essentially, the search results will change depending on subtle semantics in the query. So, phrase matching SEO will only get you so far. The SERPs returned for a search phrase may not feature that phrase at all, rather, they contain terms that are semantically associated with the query by way of a pre-defined keyword set."

Link Filters?
High Rankings Forum
"Interesting thing about backlinks I've noticed... When you have links coming from multiple pages on the same domain, they no longer seem to show up..."

How Much Text Is Ideal?
High Rankings Forum
"Have to disagree with you on the scrolling thing, though. As long as your copy is relevant and gives the reader what he/she wants scrolling is not a problem."

Still Not Listed with Inktomi
"The bad news about PFI is that all sites are subject to a review by a human being looking for breaches of their rules. This is now getting particularly strict with the forthcoming switch on Yahoo! Anyone who puts pages into PFI (particularly if they don't have a record built over the years) almost certainly will now have their sites checked by Inktomi/Yahoo editors. The same is true of anyone renewing their PFI subscriptions."

Redirect A Site Cleanly Without A 301, no access to .htaccess file
High Rankings Forum
"Don't you guys think that the spammers have long since stopped using the meta refresh tag and are using .htaccess like the rest of us? I really think the advice about meta refresh being a big problem is old info, and probably not as accurate as it once was. I mean, what's the dif. They can use .htaccess too! (And from what I understand, they do!)"

Measuring Keyword Competition
High Rankings Forum
"Wordtracker's 'competition search' doesn't really give you any idea of the level of competition. All it gives you is the total matches for an exact phrase search. A lot of those "competitors" aren't even trying. To eliminate the "accidental competitors" and figure out who you're really competing with, try these instead..."

Ranked #2 in MSN = No Traffic
"I rank #2 for a pretty competitive keyword phrase in MSN right now but I barely get any traffic. I'm assuming much of it is going to the Overture Adwords at top. Anyone else experiencing this?"

From the Small Business Brief...
(If you like our search engine news, you'll love our small business news.)

The Well-Balanced Life: The Turnaround
To all the world, Linda Yaniszewski's business looked wildly successful. The Rochester, N.Y., company she had started in 1989 to provide administrative support services primarily to the medical profession was growing faster than you can say "malpractice insurance." She had six employees, half a million in sales, and a roster of clients that seemed to multiply almost daily. It was the stuff that entrepreneurial dreams are made of, except for one thing. "I was miserable," she says.
