Take Two: Yahoo! DOES Want to Rule Search
Yesterday I wrote about a statement made by a Yahoo! exec that said the company was fine with playing second fiddle to search king Google. Today, Yahoo! is backpeddling from that statement and trying to make it clear that they are in this game to win and that they do intend to build a project good enough to topple Google from their throne.

Google Defends Censorship
It seems ironic, but at the same time that Google is fighting a battle against giving up information to the U.S. Department of Justice, they are defending their decision to restrict access to sites that China does not want it's citizens to see. Apparently Google's only concerned with privacy and open access in the United States where it knows it can safely operate.

How Offline Actions Impact Online Reputation Management
I've written several articles now talking about the need for companies to practice online reputation manage as part of their search marketing campaigns. I've also talked about how poor online reputation management can result in further harm to a company's brand. What I've not yet covered is the fact that your offline actions can also go a long way toward impacting your online reputation. Google News Out of Beta
Close on the heels of Google Earth, Google News has said bye-bye beta, hello full release. Google has celebrated the announcement with a few new features including personalized news headlines and a "most popular" feature. You can read about all of the Google News features on the Google News site.

What do Yahoo! and Avis Have in Common?
Apparently, they're both ok with being number two. Years after Avis embraced their number two spot in the rental car industry with the slogan "we try harder," a major Yahoo! executive told Bloomberg news that the Yahoo! team is perfectly happy to play second fiddle to Google when it comes to search market share.

Google and the Department of Justice
If you've not been living under a rock the past week or so, you've likely heard one or two (or a thousand) people comment on the battle that is raging between Google and the Department of Justice. While news and commentary on the situation has been flying around the media world at lightening speed, the majority of casual Internet users still seem to be having a difficult time grasping just what all the fuss is about. Why Viral Marketing Is Essential To Low-Cost Search Marketing
Think about the last time that a friend told you about a great movie that they saw over the weekend, or how much they loved a new restaurant that just opened up. On the other hand, think about the time that your brother or sister told you about the nightmare of a vacation that they had while staying at a certain hotel or motel and how you pledged to avoid it like the plague. Online viral marketing works the same way, though the results are much easier to track. (skip to "Why Viral Marketing Is Essential To Low-Cost Search Marketing" by Jennifer Laycock)

An Interview with Jill Whalen
Frequent Search Engine Guide contributor Stoney deGeyter had an interview with Jill Whalen featured on his E-Marketing Performance blog last week that I kept meaning to link too, but just am just now getting around to blogging on. The interview has some interesting tidbits in it and is worth a read if you're curious to learn more about how an SEO veteran views things.

Danny Sullivan Featured on ABC's Nightline
In case you missed it, Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Watch was recently featured on ABC's Nightline in a story about Google's refusal to hand over search data to the Bush administration. I actually heard about it after the fact but was able to see it via subscribed feed through the ABC News web site. Danny got some great air time and of course did an excellent job giving his views on the situation. We also get a peek into Danny's home office where three huge screens dominate his desktop space.

Copywriting Makeover: Subtle Changes Make A Noticeable Difference Part 1
Changing a few words in your copy can lead to double-digit increases in conversions. If that sounds like a bunch of hype from an online infomercial, stick around and I'll show you how it's done. (skip to "Copywriting Makeover: Subtle Changes Make A Noticeable Difference Part 1" by Karon Thackston)

v7ndotcom Elursrebmem For a Good Cause
Yesterday, I wrote about the new SEO contest that has would-be SEM stars everywhere targeting the phrase "v7ndotcom elursrebmem." With total prize money now in the $7000 range, it was only a matter of time till folks started offering up incentive for incoming links.

MSN Now Has More Answers
The MSN Blog announced yesterday that they had added "about 1 million" facts to their Instant Answers database. Now searches like "premier of russia," "peyton manning passing yards 2003" and "Christmas Eve customs" will return data straight from listings in sources like the Encarta Encyclopedia or other popular reference sites.

How the Search Marketing Industry Shot Itself in the Foot

Hit Counters to Boost Rankings -- Is This Accepted?
Search Engine Roundtable Forums - "I'm being pressured by the higher ups at my company to figure out a way of link building like our competitor has with their use of the web hit counter . . . what are other ways that companies do this? What else do people offer for free that contain links?"

Google Goes Into Radio
Webmaster World - "The primary offering on their site is search and always will be. That's what they grew on, and then with offering advertising acquired a huge customer base. There's just so far they can go on that, and what it looks like now is that they're starting with the original commercial advert offering and expanding more toward functioning as a multi-channel media company."

Click Fraud Report Gets Laugh From Yahoo Rep

Yahoo's Latest Results Disappoint

From the Small Business Ideas Forum...
(If you like our search engine news, you'll love our small business news.)

Sales versus Cash....HELP!
"I am the Bookkeeper and Assistant Manager for a small bar and grill. We are having a problem with our generated sales matching the cash on a daily basis. I'm not sure how to find out what is going on, or how it is happening. We have recently noticed that our cash can be up to $50+ more than the register tape shows sales. Could it be that someone is not taking tips, taking cash for food and not ringing it up, or something else."
