Hi Everyone,

Can breastfeeding moms take on the world of search marketers and win? I'm sure they can with Jennifer leading the charge with her latest idea for spreading awareness and raising funds for human milk banks. To make a long story short, there is a new SEO contest with cash prizes. Jennifer has entered the contest so she can donate all the money she wins to the Mother's Milk Bank of Ohio and the HMBANA, which oversees all North American milk banks.

Of course, she actually has to win to have any money to donate and she needs everyone's help. To learn how a simple link from your site can help save the lives of babies, please jump over to her blog via this link: how carcasherdotcom seocontest helps babies

By the way, she's already raised over $550 for the Mother's Milk Bank of Ohio thanks in large part to you. :-)

Finally, Jennifer has wrangled a free pass from The Karcher Group for their "Web Marketing Made Simple" seminar on February 7th and 8th in Columbus Ohio. To learn how to be considered for the free pass read her blog post "Want to Learn About Online Marketing? For Free?"

Have a great week!

Robert Clough

Yet Another SEM Contest - So Let's Raise Money for Charity!
by Jennifer Laycock - While I stayed out of the last seo contest, I've decided to go ahead and enter this one in the hopes that I can use carcasherdotcom seocontest as a fundraiser for the milk bank that I highlighted in the 30 day article series.

21 Tips for Better Online Credibility
by Todd Malicoat - One way to increase on the conversion question is to increase credibility. To me it makes sense that if it adds credibility for the user, it's eventually gonna be rolled into an algorithm somewhere as well.

Mirror Sites for Flash
by Jill Whalen - My sister had a nice (Flash-based) site created for her. The web developer told her he is going to create a mirror site with HTML to deal with the issue of an all-Flash site.

Copywriting Makeover: Subtle Changes Make A Noticeable Difference Part 2 of 2
by Karon Thackston - The headline needed to evoke feelings of trust for the skeptical and a sense of stability for the hesitant. It also needed to provide an obvious benefit - one that would catch the reader's attention.

Google Launches Toolbar Update
by Jennifer Laycock - The Google Toolbar is testing some new toys. From the addition of quick launch buttons to Google based bookmarking to closer integration with Gmail and Blogger, the toolbar upgrades look promising.

The Real Cost of SEO: It’s not Budget, It’s Believers!
by Gord Hotchkiss - There is a cost to SEO. It's not the budget required, which is minimal relative to other marketing initiatives. It's the time and patience required on the part of one person to get the buy in that's needed to make SEO happen.

Sitemap Pages Don't Help Search Engine Rankings
by Bill Hartzer - Sitemaps and XML files, mainly made for the Google Sitemaps program are pretty much useless for ranking purposes. Don't expect to give Google a URL to crawl and expect it to rank anywhere for anything if you don't have everything else in place (like on-topic links to the URL).

Unified Theory of Google
by Jim Hedger - Along with its competitors, Google has been undergoing a remarkable series of changes over the past six months as it adds new features, acquires new technologies and expands its operations. It is no longer a pure search engine company though its search engine is the most popular around the world.

How To Be An Ideal SEO Client
by Todd Mintz - If your company has selected or will select an SEO vendor to optimize your corporate website for natural search. How can you best work with an SEO to achieve the best outcome for your website?

Link Building is Relationship Building
by Jennifer Laycock - Many web site owners find link requests to be perplexing. The web is simply full of articles telling site owners how NOT to link build, but with all those lists of "don'ts" floating around, it's still tough to figure out what the "do's" are.

Lights, Camera, Point and Click!
by Jennifer Laycock - Search is the engine that underlies all this functionality. It is the bridge that connects intent and content. This core functionality that will drive almost all online connections in the future.

Get Rich Quick SEO
by Jill Whalen - Whether it's search marketing or any other business that you want to get into, no person, book, website, or seminar can make you successful; not in 15 minutes, 15 days, or even 15 years.

Search Engine Guide Blog Posts

Google Under Fire From Newspapers Again
Last year, I wrote a few articles about the court battles Google was facing from French company Agence France-Presse and the Associated Press. I also featured two guest articles from Bob Hoffman, an AFP partner site that was facing some serious trouble as a result of the lawsuit. This time around, it's the Paris based World Association of Newspapers that's looking for a fight.

Want to Learn About Online Marketing? For Free?
Here's your shot...I mentioned earlier this week that I'll be spending two days chatting up some folks about all things online marketing next week with Matt Bailey. Passes to the seminar run $249 for the two day show (and there are still some spots left), but we thought we'd throw out a last minute invite for a Search Engine Guide reader to lay claim to a free pass. So, if you know for sure that you can attend the show next week on February 7th and 8th in Columbus, Ohio, drop me an email (jennifer at search engine guide dot com) and tell me your story. Give me the best reason on why you'd like to attend, and we'll comp you a pass. Hurry though, I'll be picking the winner by Thursday evening. Everyone else will have to register online if they want to attend.

Search Marketing Continues to Rise
Media Post Publications reports on some new data today that shows most marketers believe Google AdWords gives a better return on investment than pay-per-click ads that run on Yahoo! or MSN. The study also showed that search marketing spending is expected to continue outpacing print, TV and radio spending into the next year.

Bridging the Gap Between the Page, Keywords and Copywriting
When keyword themes are applied correctly throughout the site, whether to existing or newly created pages, copywriting should come naturally without feeling forced or your visitor even noticing your targeted phrases. Sometimes, You Need a Laugh...
Earlier today, a friend sent me over a link to a really great (ok, just funny) technology primer that most Search Engine Guide readers will probably get a kick out of. If you're not familiar with Strong Bad, this one may throw you for a loop, but if you need a laugh in your day, check out Strong Bad's Introduction to Technology.

Why Advertising Agencies Hate Search Marketing
Todd "stuntdubl" Malicoat has a great post this week that explores the problems that traditional ad agencies and search marketers have when it comes time to play together. I've been thinking about this very issue all week while talking to someone I know that works at a traditional firm. Todd outlines eleven reasons and from what I can tell, all of them are pretty much spot on.

Looking to Integrate Google Maps with Your Site?
Ran across an excellent listing today of sites, articles and tools designed to help web site owners integrate Google Maps with their own sites. The Google Maps Mania blog has listings for Google Maps creation tools, web tools and applications that make use of Google Maps and information on using the Google Maps API.

Mirror Sites for Flash
My sister had a nice (Flash-based) site created for her. The web developer told her he is going to create a mirror site with HTML to deal with the issue of an all-Flash site. (skip to "Mirror Sites for Flash" by Jill Whalen)

An Open Letter to Google
Miel van Opstal has an excellent open letter to Google over at Coolzor today. The letter's pretty lengthy, but does a great job of highlighting the issues at hand over the Google/China censorship issues. It also includes some interesting notes about changes that Google has made on their site about their stance on censorship and hand manipulation of search results.

Google Launches Toolbar Update
The Google Toolbar is testing some new toys. In a beta launch available only to IE users, Google is offering several new features aimed at making the Google toolbar a more personal and more powerful browsing companion. From the addition of quick launch buttons to Google based bookmarking to closer integration with Gmail and Blogger, the toolbar upgrades look promising. (skip to "Google Launches Toolbar Update" by Jennifer Laycock)

Promo Discount for Web Marketing Seminar
I blogged a few weeks ago about the upcoming two-day web marketing seminar that I'm putting on with Matt Bailey of The Karcher Group here in Columbus, Ohio. The seminar is coming up next week, February 7th and 8th and will give small business owners a chance to learn everything from the basics of search engine marketing to more advanced subjects like blogging for sales, viral marketing and online public relations. This week, we're offering a "late bird" discount of $50 to anyone entering the promo code "seminar6" on the registration form.

New Search Marketing Magazine Launches
I had a press release pop into my mailbox last week from Boris Mordkovich, a sometimes guest writer for Search Engine Guide. Boris was writing to let me know that his company, MordComm, Inc. was going to begin publishing a new quarterly magazine this summer focused on search engine marketing.

Directory Submission Is Getting More Costly
Directories that accept free submissions are quickly disappearing and paid ones are getting more expensive all the time. Two recent forum discussions debate whether directory submissions are still a worthwhile marketing effort. This has also prompted me to update an article I wrote in April of last year entitled, "Directories: Love 'em or Leave 'em".

The Two Faces of Google
Thanks to Matt for emailing me a link to a post over at Little green footballs that gives a pretty good example of where Google stands on censorship if they think it's going to get them into a new market.

Unified Theory of Google
Along with its competitors, Google has been undergoing a remarkable series of changes over the past six months as it adds new features, acquires new technologies and expands its operations. It is no longer a pure search engine company though its search engine is the most popular around the world. Google acknowledged the shift early last summer when CEO Eric Schmidt famously defined Google as a media company. (skip to "Unified Theory of Google" by Jim Hedger)

Google Tests Rich Media Ads
Spotted via JenSense is news that Google is working with some select AdSense advertisers to begin testing rich media ads. The new ad formats include expanding ads, floating ads and interstitial ads and are likely going to be site targeted rather than contextual.

Google, DOJ Headed to Court
Earlier this week, I wrote an article examining the battle taking place between the U.S. Government and Google with regards to a request from the Department of Justice for access to Google's index. With neither Google nor the U.S. Department of Justice willing to give in, it looks like the battle over Google's data is headed to the courts.

Google Adds Desktop AdWords Editor
Gary Price noted earlier this week on the Search Engine Watch blog that Google was quietly testing a new desktop editor for their AdWords platform. The desktop version is still in beta and available by invitation only, but hopefully it will quickly make it's way into the public realm.

Google Cleared to Keep on Caching
A Nevada court ruled today that Google is in the clear when it comes to keeping cached versions of web sites on their servers. A case was brought against Google by Blake Field, an author and attorney who argued that Google had illegally made copies of his web site, violating copyright laws.

The Search Marketing Standard - a New Print Magazine for Search Marketers
A new search engine marketing print magazine is due to be release this summer entitled The Search Marketing Standard. The official press release states the following: "It was announced today that a brand-new publication -- “Search Marketing Standard” -- has been launched to cover the search industry. This magazine will be the first and only periodical completely devoted to the world of search marketing." A sign that our industry is maturing? Maybe!

Discussion Threads of the Week
(Links to search engine forum discussion threads that deal with search engine marketing topics. Each listing provides the topic, the source, and a brief snippet from the discussion.)

H1, H2, H3 Placement, per W3C standards
High Rankings Forum - "It's intended as a sub-ordinal system. Any H1 should apply to the entire page. Any H2 should apply to content within that page, and any H3 should apply to content within an H2, etc."

Google Toolbar 4 for IE
Webmaster World - "This toolbar appears to me as a kind of mortar to help keep the pieces together, like a software as service application or a virtual desktop- or at least that's the direction it seems to be taking."

Up The Creek With Google AdWords Broad Match
Search Engine Watch Forums - "The broad match feature in Google AdWords went a little too far for this member, but neither does he want to exact or phrase match everything. Advice and thoughts on narrowing the broad?"

Buying Links and Google
High Rankings Forum - "...where paid links are concerned, I think Matt has made it very clear that all that Google is going to do is ignore the paid links it discovers. That undermines the value-derived-from-PageRank models but it doesn't in any way affect the models that assign and negotiate value for other reasons."

Just When You Think You Have Linking Nailed...
High Rankings Forum - "...seems to me that I can rank a lot more if I slip into the link world a little deeper where the people are using their wit to develop neater strategies than the good ole standards. I am nervous to start getting into these circles tho, because my site cannot fall. Too many people rely on me."

Big News for AdWords Junkies a Google Adwords Editor
Webmaster World - "AdWords Editor is Google's free, downloadable account management application for your computer. Now you can download your AdWords account to your computer, make your changes, then upload your revised campaigns."

Are Google's Guidelines Harmfully Confusing? Yes.
Search Engine Watch Forums - "Although there are some hints, as Jill found, in the guidelines that Google may not like this - there are also hints to encourage webmasters to gain links. It's not clear, it's confusing and I believe harmfully so."

Yahoo Reaffirms Commitment to Search
Webmaster World - "Yahoo is still very much committed to search, the company said in response to a media report claiming that the company had conceded the search battle to Google."

Frames to non-frames
Search Engine Watch Forums - "Search engines have never liked frames, and a member is finally about to jump away from them. Anyone with advice to soothe his worries?"

Google Agrees To Chinese Censorship
Search Engine Watch Forums - "Don't you know?... Complying with your own government is a violation of your rights. Complying with another government is a good business relationship."

Nevada Federal Court Rules that Google "Cache" Not Copyright Violation
Webmaster World - "A Nevada federal court has ruled that the cached versions of Web pages that Google stores and offers as a part of many search results are not copyright infringement."

Effectiveness of Link Popularity Decreasing?
Search Engine Roundtable Forums - "Does Google's apparent de-valuing of reciprocal links lead you to believe that the concept of link popularity is going to decrease in importance altogether in the near future? And, if so, how might Google compensate for the loss of this ranking factor?"

If 50 Websites Optimize Properly
High Rankings Forum - "So how does Google decide which 10 pages to put first? It hardly matters from Google's persepctive because they really have a few hundred pages that would be 100% relevent and 100% authoritative..."

Would you subscribe or read a print SEO pub?
Cre8asite Forums - "I got a press release about a new print magazine for SEO/M's called Search Marketing Standard. ...I like glossy pages and in-depth articles myself, but these days, I rarely subscribe to print pubs due to blogs and RSS Feeds. Even with a free subscription offer, I'm still looking for a really really good reason to subscribe."

Morning Paid Clicks Worth More Than Evening Clicks?
Search Engine Watch Forums - "Good morning early searcher? Are you worth more to advertisers than your PM counterparts?"

They want my contact/client list - And THEY made me an Independent Contractor!
"I received a call from the owner of the company wanting my contact/client list in the event that I seek employment elsewhere. They said that they want to make sure that there's no argument as to which sales belong to whom."
