Hi Everyone,

Today is the last day of school here. I'm 50% thrilled and 50%... uh... not so thrilled. :-) (I'm sure every parent knows what I'm talking about.) Then again, I really am looking forward to all the cool stuff we can do in the summer so let's change that to 75% thrilled. Yay summer!

Have a great week!

Search Engine Marketing Articles

Is Google Dropping Sites They Disagree With?
by Jennifer Laycock - There's some buzz moving around the blogosphere that speculates on whether the left-leaning ideology behind one of the most popular search sites on the Internet may be tainting their ability to provide unbiased results through the Google News search engine and through the actual Google Web search.

The Missing Element in Search Engine Marketing - Part 4
by Robin Nobles - Remember that Web site solutions don't have to come in the form of search engine optimization or technology. They can often come in the form of creativity . . . the missing element in search engine marketing.

Keeping SEM Costs Reasonable for a Small Business
by Jennifer Laycock - With quality search marketing consultants now charging anywhere from $100 to $500 an hour and some companies requiring at least $10K to even start working on your site, search marketing seems to be leaping out of reach for most small business owners. It doesn't have to be that way.

Who's at Fault? Google or Your SEO Strategy?
by Ryan Jones - One of the hardest things to do in SEO is to look at your site from the perspective of a searcher. That's why it's a great idea to hire a 3rd party company, they're not attached to your site in any way; they have no feelings to hurt.

Blog Usability Interview with Kim Krause Berg
by Aaron Wall - A while ago I contacted Kim Krause Berg for a usability review, but I threw a curve ball in on her. I asked her how I could make this blog more usable. I believe Kim is the first person who has ever offered blog usability review services.

How to Persuade Others to Give You Their Money
by Stoney deGeyter - You’d be surprised with the impression you can make with a quickly returned phone call. I can’t count the number of sales I’ve made because I’d called and gotten a contract signed before another SEO company even returned the prospects call or email.

Three Pillars for Better Search Engine Rankings
by Lee Odden - In the search engine marketing/optimization community there are abundant resources and articles on how to improve rankings. So much in fact, it can be confusing as to which tactics are current and valid.

Net Neutrality - Why Every SEO & Small Business Should Care
by Bretton Jones - Net Neutrality, as an issue, has come about as the result of the large telecoms claiming that while providing internet service, they have the right to limit bandwidth or block access to web sites that don't pay them a premium to access their networks.

Are You A Link Whore?
by Eric Ward - For the right price you think I'll engage in sleazy link building tactics normally only used by gambling or viagra sites? Nope. And it's not because I think I occupy some sort of high moral ground. It's because these tactics make the web experience worse and simply don't work. And the sooner everyone stops being link whores, the better, in my opinion.

Lots of Traffic Doesn’t Always Mean Lots of Money
by Bill Hartzer - Just because you have a lot of visitors on your web site doesn't necessarily mean that your web site is going to make you a lot of money. And you don't have to have a lot of visitors in order to make a lot of money from your web site—you've got to have the right visitors looking for what your web site has to offer.

The Missing Element in Search Engine Marketing - Part 3
by Robin Nobles - If you have a branding problem online, get your brainstorming team together and think about what you can do about "GJL Retail" and how to brand it and make it memorable.

Making It Easy for Customers To Choose You
by Karon Thackston - When customers come to your site, they are looking for a clear reason to buy from you instead of all the other sites. Do you give them a reason? Do you give them several reasons?

Blog Optimization
by Lee Odden - With blogs, there exist as many or more optimization opportunities to optimize as with a web site. While most blog software is more search engine friendly out of the box than many web sites, the opportunities for blog optimization are readily available.

Say Bye-bye to Rankings and Hello to SEO Success!
by Jill Whalen - There are a zillion other things that you can learn when measuring your true SEO success through web analytics. If you're not already using a good program (and learning from it), I can't stress enough how important it is to start doing it.

Search Engine Guide Blog Posts

Best and Worst of Google
Philipp Lenssen has a little fun today with his list of awards for the best and worst of Google. Lenssen comments on everything from the best Google owned home page (Blogger) to the "Most Interesting Labs product that never graduated (Google Sets). The post covers 23 different topics and reminded me of a few things that I'd forgotten myself. It's a bit of fun to read through, so check it out if you have a spare moment.

Estimate the Value of a Link on Your Site
Patrick Gavin and the team over at Text Link Ads have put together a new calculator designed to give you an idea of the value of a link on your site. The calculator looks at issues like the popularity of your domain, the topic you cover, the number of links you offer and the location of those links. While it certainly doesn't tell you exactly what you should charge, it can give you some idea of the overall value of your site.

Google Adds Video Ads to Content Network
The Inside AdWords blog shared details yesterday about plans to offer click to play video ads on the AdSense network. The new video ads program will be tested in the U.S., Japan and Canada and ads will compete for placement with other Flash, text and image ads. They'll also be available on either a CPC or CPM basis.

Making Money with Blogs
Blogs are the current sweetheart of the search engine marketing world. They are natural link attractors, easy to update with new content and tend to draw quality traffic more quickly than traditional web sites. That's why many online entrepreneurs are so intrigued by them and are looking to learn more about how to get started. To that end, Performancing's Chris Garrett has a great post this week that examines the idea that blogging for dollars takes more than just...well...blogging.

Clickfraud Bot Scamming via Zombie Computers
It sounds like something out of a bad UHF sci-fi flick, but it's actually a growing problem on the Internet. These days, fraudsters are moving past the point of spyware and adware and are instead planting remotely controlled click fraud bots onto unsuspecting Internet users' computers. The bots are hard to detect and can be programming to rack up PPC clicks on sites designated by the bot's creators.

Google Class Action Emails Going Out
Philipp Lenssen reports and a trip to the Google AdWords blog confirms that emails are going out to AdWords advertisers to notify them of how to claim their portion of Google's settlement to the recent click fraud class action suit. The email links to the full Google click fraud settlement statement and features the subject line "Important Legal Notice Regarding Your Google AdWords Account."

Net Neutrality - Why Every SEO & Small Business Should Care

Estimate Your Google Traffic
Spotted via Philipp Lenssen... the Google AdWords Keywords Traffic Estimator tool allows you to gather traffic estimates for your keyword advertising campaigns without having to log in to your account. While the ability to get this data without logging in may not sound all that amazing, it will be handy for the businesses that aren't already running AdWords campaigns and don't want to take the time to go through the traditional system to get these types of estimates.

Jumping into Blogging as a Small Business
BusinessWeek's Karen Klein is running a two-part series on small business blogging that's worth checking out. With the many benefits that blogging can bring to your search marketing efforts (original content, inbound links...) it's not surprising that more and more small businesses are trying to decide if blogging is the right move for their business. Klein does a nice job of laying out some of the pros and cons of small business blogging and of offering up some suggestions on how to do it right.

Limited AdWords Budget? Spread it Out!
While Google AdWords advertisers have long had the option to set a daily budget, they still had to deal with the issue of watching their budget get used up early in the day. For companies that experience higher conversion rates in the afternoon or evening, that could be a frustrating issue. That's why some companies will be thrilled to learn that the AdWords team has added a new delivery option that would spread impressions out over time.

Are Brand Name Searches Overvalued?
There's an interesting article over at MediaPost Publications that talks about the true value of brand name search terms. The article looks at information contained in a report put together by search marketing firm 360i that tracks the ultimate conversion rates for generic search terms and for brand name search terms.

Putting to Rest the Alexa Myth
For some reason the myth that Alexa data is an accurate reflection of a web site's value is still being passed around among new web site owners and small online businesses. While many have written articles explaining why it's not generally a good idea to use Alexa as a way to judge a site's value, Google's Matt Cutts has a blog post this week that gives one of the most compelling arguments I've seen.

Is Microsoft Planning to Offer Free Analytics?
Ben Charny over at eWeek asks that question today in their Google Watch column. Microsoft bought Internet intelligence firm DeepMetrix earlier this year leading to speculation over things like analytics and enterprise search.

Discussion Threads of the Week
(Links to search engine forum discussion threads that deal with search engine marketing topics. Each listing provides the topic, the source, and a brief snippet from the discussion.)

Google Sends Out Class Action Settlement Info -- Do It Or Not?
Search Engine Watch Forums - "Google's now sent info out about a proposed settlement to a class action case over click fraud. Members and others are visiting ClickSettlement.com to get the details. How say you? Going to settle for what's offered?"

Snap.com
High Rankings Forum - "... it's worth checking out, seems to run really slow but it's nice to see something different in the world of search. I really like their tag line too, 'The other way to search.'"

Opting Out Of Open Directory Listings At MSN
High Rankings Forum - "MSN is doing what Google should have done a long time ago and have instituted a meta tag to opt out of them using the ODP description for your MSN description!"

Google's Weaknesses
V7N Forums - "If somebody were to launch a search engine to compete with Google, what weaknesses of Google's do you think could be exploited?"

Google's site: Query Gives Wrong Results for Hyphenated Domains
Webmaster World - "Google's report: 'We've had some issues with our 'site:' operator not returning appropriate results when used with hyphenated domains... so it's quite likely that much of the falloff you've seen is thankfully illusory. We've noted similar discrepancies with site: searches using domains with a trailing slash as well.'"

Google's Definition of "Relevant Linking"
Search Engine Watch Forums - "One member is confused and concerned over Matt Cutts' recent statements on relevant links."

Say Bye-bye to Rankings and Hello to SEO Success!
Small Business Ideas Forum - "Conversions really are more important than the traffic itself. While it would certainly be nice to show up #1 for my favorite keyword it's completely meaningless if none of the people who see my link click on it or if those that do fail to convert on my site once they get there."

PPC Analytics Is Only Wishful Thinking
Search Engine Roundtable Forums - "I am in a debate with someone who doesn’t believe search is any more accountable, measurable or effective as a marketing channel than traditional media like TV, radio and magazines. It's a bit like arguing with someone who still believes the earth is flat. My only problem is that the arguments made aren’t that bad."

Yahoo - Where to Start with Link SEO
Webmaster World - "There's lots of ways to get more links. All the good ones involve work, but stick at it and it can be done..."

Why Does Ask Not Run a PPC Campaign
Webmaster World - "Overture shows 669,855 searches for 'search engine' and Ask doesn't even show up in the top-30 organic results on Google."

Inbound Linking Experiment
High Rankings Forum - "How do I measure the success of my inbound link strategy, and prove to my boss it is worth investing time?"

Any Real Danger In Alt Tag Stuffing
V7N Forum - "Please keep in mind that visually impaired persons who use text readers count on Alt Tags to browse websites. They are not just an SEO tool and have considerable meaning to many people."

Unofficial Google Subscribed Links List
Search Engine Watch Forums - "Danny Sullivan and others start showing off Google Co-Op Subscribed Links lists."
