Hi Everyone,

As strange as it seems (to me anyway), my kids already go back to school next week. I'm a little sad about it this year because it seems so soon and it was a fun summer. Oh well, I do get more work done during the school year and business always picks up as fewer people are taking vacations. Plus, we have the NFL season to look forward to. Yay!

Have a great week!

Robert Clough

Spotlight on Blog Marketing Interview with Phil Hollows of FeedBlitz
by Lee Odden - Today’s interview is with Phil Hollows, Founder and CEO of the popular RSS to email service, FeedBlitz. Recently Phil took FeedBlitz on as a full time gig, has secured investor financing and is hiring. What better time than now to check in with Phil for a peek behind the FeedBlitz curtain.

Interactive Media: Good or Bad?
by Manoj Jasra - Most search marketing companies have it ingrained in their minds that media on a site is considered a negative feature because search engine spiders can’t index the content. After all, if they can’t find your content, there goes the relevance that could otherwise have influenced your rankings.

How to Win Links and Influence People - Part 3
by Jennifer Laycock - The last in a three part series that focuses on taking the common sense tenets found in Dale Carnegie's best-seller "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and applying them to various forms of online marketing. This week it's online reputation management and once again, we'll be looking at some of Carnegie's tenets and how they can be applied with common sense to keeping your online reputation intact.

What Are Good and Bad URLs and How to Fix the Bad Ones.
by Ross Dunn - The tweak I was speaking about is used to modify your dynamic URLs in order to make them appear static. Essentially this is a customization that needs to be done to a server to ensure that dynamic URL’s (where lots of “?&=” appear) look like static URLs. By creating static URLs you can be reasonably sure that the search engines will index your website deeper and in a quicker fashion.

Two Companies Merging
by Jill Whalen - I'm looking for some advice on the impact of natural search on two companies that have merged so I can advise on how best to proceed. They currently have two sites that perform well in the SERPS and have different content but are obviously competing on the same keyphrases and are now one company.

What Exactly Are Good Backlinks?
by Ross Dunn - I have had enough of comments from everyone saying the website should have quality backlinks. I would agree to that too. But when you say Quality, can anyone really define it? It becomes TOO vague sometimes. I am sure this will be a great help to other SEO people around.

AOL Gives Unprecedented Keyword Search Information
It's a move that will interest marketers and infuriated privacy advocates. Google Blogoscoped reports today that AOL has released some 20 million search queries conducted by users over the past three months. The issue is that the searches are all tied together by the individual searcher than conducted them. AOL did change the data from listing the username to listing a generic user ID number, but the reality is that someone with a bit of time and energy could still identify specific searchers based on an analysis of the data.

Keep Up With San Jose from Anywhere
While thousands of people from around the world have congregated in San Jose this week for the Search Engine Strategies show, the good news is that even if you're stuck at home, you can still keep in touch with what's going on. As usual the hardworking team from Search Engine Roundtable will be posting full coverage of a good chunk of the sessions at the show.

Live from San Jose
This week I'll be blogging live from San Jose, California. I'm out here for the Search Engine Strategies show and will be until last Thursday night. If you are out here, please do look me up and say hello as I'd love to meet some Search Engine Guide readers. I'll be moderating the Keyword Research session this morning at 11am and will be speaking in three different sessions on Wednesday.

Microsoft's adCenter Plans Updates to System Tomorrow
Microsoft will be making some changes to the management interface of the adCenter system tomorrow, which will mean that advertisers won't be able to access or edit their accounts. Your ads will continue to run during that time, you just won't be able to spend any time working on your campaigns. The updates should prove useful though, especially the one that will finally allow adCenter to run on Firefox. Other changes include more frequent updates to campaign data and some updates to the user interface of the reporting area.

Getting Ready for a Redesign? Don't Tank your SEO Work...
One of the most challenging things that the owner of a well optimized web site can face is a redesign. Rob Garner tackles this issue in a great article over at MediaPost Publications titled "Natural-Born Search Killers." Garner explores some of the common trip-ups that can cause a well ranking site to drop into oblivion including the seemingly innocent idea of restructuring your URLs. Since recent surveys show that site redesigns will lead the way in web related spending next year, this is an important issue for both large and small business owners to consider.

Search Engines Team Up to Self-Regulate Click Fraud
t could be good news, it could be bad news. After years of the general attitude of "it's not that bad," the major search engines seem to be acknowledging that click fraud DOES pose a thread to search engine marketing and that they need to be proactive in finding ways to deal with it. ClickZ's Elinor Mills talks about how the major engines (Google, Yahoo!, MSN, Ask for starters) are joining with the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and the nonprofit Media Rating Council to form the Click Measurement Working Group.

SEO Seen as one of "Four Cutting Edge Jobs"
It's news that anyone already in the industry could have told you...search engine marketing is a hot industry. The potential for a skilled search engine optimization specialist is almost endless. There are quite literally more jobs than there are skilled marketers and salaries can skyrocket to almost embarrassing levels. It seems that with those things in mind, SEO has finally caught the attention of some more mainstream staffing firms. Andy Beal points to an article over at MSN Careers from Robert Half International Inc. staffing firm that includes SEO as one of "Four Jobs on the Cutting Edge."

Google Sitemaps Problems? May Come from the Generator Used.
Webmaster World - "Many non-techie folk rely totally on 'off the shelf' sitemap generators. This may be where some Sitemaps problems lie. One I've used only included pages to level two; another often (but not always) omitted the last few lines of the map; and a third repeatedly claimed errors that simply did not exist. And all three of these programs are listed on Google's website."

Google "Sitemaps" Appropriately Renamed
Search Engine Watch Forums - "Google makes a shift towards helping webmasters more easily, with the renaming of Sitemaps and newly added tools."
