Search Engine Marketing News - 2006-08-16

Read by over 22,000 subscribers each week!

Hi Everyone,

After years of being part of a larger SEO firm, Chris Logan (a friend and forum moderator) is going solo in the search marketing world. Yay!

If you are in need of search engine marketing services to help you get more customers, I'd definitely recommend Chris.

Chris can handle everything from basic sites to complex monsters with lots of programming issues, shopping carts, etc.

Chris not only has years of SEO experience under his belt but he also has a traditional background in sales marketing so he is focused on bringing in visitors and converting them to paying customers. He's a bottom line type.

If you are looking for a search engine marketing expert, Chris is your guy. Whether you want him to handle everything or train you and your staff to handle the project in house.

Finally, Chris is a friendly person and he knows that you've been busy running your business and you may know very little about search marketing.

Chris is NOT the type who will talk down to you or roll his eyes when you ask a question. He's not a typical SEO-ego-freak. His interest is in helping you make money, not trying to convince you how smart he is.

Give him a call at (727) 487-3443 or drop by his site.

Have a great week!

Robert Clough

Search Engine Marketing Articles

Google XML Sitemaps - The Basics
by Scott Van Achte - Google XML Sitemaps have been around for a while now and many webmasters are starting to become familiar with them. They can help you to achieve up to date indexing in Google, and, in a round about way, play a small roll in assisting with rankings. Sitemaps are not needed by everyone, but can be of significant use for many websites.

Extra Characters in Title Tags
by Jill Whalen - Do the search engines see the addition of this character: | in the title tag as words/characters, thus reducing the amount of words you should put in the title tag? I am using the character to separate the various services we offer so that they are clear to the people searching, as they are very different.

Did You Know You Had Stats?
by Ross Dunn - Stats, better known as statistics, conjure up bad memories for many who unhappily sat through this post-secondary statistics course. Hey, let’s face it; pouring over statistics is not for everyone. Before you delve into the world of analytics I want to provide you with a brief outline of the more popular analytics terms that you will often encounter.

Two Views Of Tempus Fugit
by Gord Hotchkiss - In the world I normally live in, time is constantly ticking towards the next deadline, and those deadlines usually come in sets, stacked on top of each other, dictating that impossible amounts of work get done before the seconds tick away. Companies have to go from start-up to sell-out in years, or even months. The Internet encourages and enables this compression. It's a phenomenon that goes hand in hand with the digital wiring of the world, but for some reason, it's much more noticeable in the new world than the old.

Loads and Loads of Link Building Ideas
Aaron Wall and Andy Hagans have put together a heck of a list of ideas for building link popularity to your blog or web site. Since links as an essential ranking tool are unlikely to vanish any time soon (well...ever really...) it's a good idea to be constantly coming up with new ways to attract incoming links to your site. That's why Wall and Hagens have put together this list of 101 Ways to Build Link Popularity in 2006.

Google Offers Up Coupon Service for AdWords Advertisers
In a move designed to show that online search is closely tied to offline purchases, Google has decided to allow AdWords advertisers to offer printable coupons via the Google Maps service. MediaPost Publications reports that the new offering was sparked by a partnership with local coupon distributor ValPack, but will soon be expanded to all AdWords advertisers.

Meet AOL Searcher #4417749
I wrote last week about AOL's gaffe in revealing the search terms used by millions of their users during a three month period. As it turns out, simply linking the searches to a number rather than a name really didn't cut the mustard as far as protecting privacy. The New York Times was actually able to track down 62 year old Thelma Arnold simply based on the searches that she entered into the AOL search box. Scary...huh?

To Google, or Not to "google"...
I missed a great article last week while I was buzzing around Search Engine Strategies in San Jose. It's from the Seattle Times and it discusses Google's annoyance with media outlets that continue to use the word "google" as a verb meaning "to search." It was just last month that the word "google" was included in the latest version of the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, but the folks at Google the company are not dancing with joy. In fact, they're busy sending out letters from their trademark lawyer to reporters and media outlets.

Ask Yourself This...Why Not Ask?
One of the down sides of having the job that I have is that I need to come up with tons of content on a daily basis for this site. Some days, there's plenty to talk about and that means I spend a couple of hours scanning news stories, writing up articles and throwing some blog posts together. Other days it means spending the entire day reading news source after news source and still coming up with nothing interesting to say. Some days, it also means noticing that every single thing I've written happens to be about Google. Well, to be quite honest with you, I'm tired of writing about Google. So, I've asked myself..."Why not Ask?

Our Baby is Growing Up...
No, not that cute little thing that darts around my home office at lightening speed while I try to write content...in this case, I'm talking about the search marketing industry. Sure, we're a little more than a decade old now, but I am starting to see an interesting shift just within the last year or so. It really hit me just this past week while I was in San Jose for the latest Search Engine Strategies show. So what is it that makes me think our little cottage industry is starting to mature?

Discussion Threads of the Week
(Links to search engine forum discussion threads that deal with search engine marketing topics. Each listing provides the topic, the source, and a brief snippet from the discussion.)

Photos from SES
Small Business Ideas Forum - "It was cool to officially meet both of them, David Wallace, many others, and to hang out again with some old 'search' friends. The SES attendance was just fantastic, 'Club G' was a blast, and I was actually sad to leave San Jose!"

Why Google Might "Ignore" a robots.txt Disallow Rule
Webmaster World - "What appears to happen is that as soon as you add a User-agent: Googlebot section, then Google starts indexing all the URLs that are not mentioned in that section, even if they are mentioned in the User-agent: * section."

Importance of Fresh Links
V7N Forum - "I see a lot of older sites with awesome linkage dropping in the SERPs, and I think it it has to do with fresh links. Of my own sites, I see older sites drop in the SERPs if they don't regularly get new, fresh links. Thoughts?"

Kanoodle & Moniker: What unique strengths and assets do they bring together?
Webmaster World - "With the kind of parking traffic Moniker has, this makes sense for Kanoodle so that they can make a more reasonable attempt at the PPC provider game. Yahoo and Google are already slugging it out for parking page traffic, because there is a LOT of it and it is pretty good quality with lower levels of fraud. The acquisition likely gives Kanoodle an entry point with decent traffic for once."

Yahoo! Search Builder
Webmaster World - "Now, whether you have a blog or website about diving, gaming, crafting, or anything in between you can create a search engine tailored for your users."

Google Picked As MySpace Partner
Webmaster World - "Google Inc. has been chosen by News Corp's MySpace to provide search listings for the social-networking site in a four-year deal that will give Fox Web sites at least $900 million in payments..."

Google To Identify Malware Sites In Search Results
Webmaster World - "Google has started warning people when search results could potentially lead them to malicious code."

SES 2006: Social Networks and SEM
WebProWorld Forum - "At the core of this discussion are two questions; (1)why do we (you and me as students of SEO) believe that social networking is of value and (2) if I built a social networking site (digg/stumble etc) why did I do that? What was my intent?"

AOL Releases Search Data
Cre8asite Forums - "Being able to see actual queries, and query refinements, the way people search for information, and whether they add words to a query, delete words, make spelling corrections, and so on, is some valuable information in that it provides a way to see how people actually search the web."

Are Yahoo Directory Links Still Worth It?
High Rankings Forum - "If Yahoo's Directory is not linking directly to my site, will I get any benefit in terms of PR or Trust?"

AOL Inadvertently Releases Search Query Data
Search Engine Watch Forums - "The recent disclosure of 'anonymous' user data has had the search community buzzing."

Does Googlebot Parse CSS?
Search Engine Watch Forums - "Discuss methods of using CSS effectively for search engine optimization."

AdSense for Search Results On Your Site
