Three Final Checks for Your Optimized Pages
by Stoney deGeyter - If you are always optimizing pages then you probably know how easy it is to overlook small, but important things. It's the small things that, when over looked, can often throw the biggest wrenches in the works for an otherwise well-optimized site. Here are the three most commonly overlooked tasks when uploaded new or changed content to your website:

The Five “P’s of Marketing: Do They Apply to SEM? Part Two
by Jody Nimetz - As discussed in part one of the Five P’s of Marketing, the Marketing Mix is made up of five variables. The question becomes what role does each of these variables play in search marketing efforts? Let’s look it from the eyes of a website owner who is marketing their product or service through their website.

The Purpose and Practice of Writing Successful SEO Articles
by Karon Thackston - There is such a barrage of worthless articles floating around the ‘Net these days. Keyword-stuffed, useless ramble that was obviously written with the sole intent of attempting to rank highly. Striving for top rankings is not a bad thing, but the purpose of writing SEO articles is threefold: provide information, rank highly when used on your site and increase link popularity.

The Future of Online Video Ads
by Bruce Clay - Online video ads have great potential on the web and are particularly appealing to a young, wired demographic. As online videos become more popular on user-generated sites like YouTube, the audience for video ads will increase, as will the number of video ads created.

Being Proactive can Yield High Returns
by Manoj Jasra - If your IT team decides that an analytics implementation project is too daunting of a task to code on individual pages, I would suggest that you start with a cost/benefit analysis. According to the time value of money, the NPV of a 2% higher conversion rate (and revenues associated with that) will more than likely be worth a lot more than the cost of the implementation in the first place.

How To Create Your Own Wikipedia Page
by Todd Mintz - Many of you likely have tried to place your website link on a Wikipedia page. What most probably happened is a zealous Wikipedia editor likely removed your link very quickly because the prevailing view is that appending your external link to the bottom of a previously created page adds little to the community and likely only benefits you.

Have Your Company Listed Free in Google Maps
by Ross Dunn - Do you want to advertise the physical location of your business for free and get a little extra Google exposure? Thanks to Google Maps this is possible and not many people (read ‘your competition’) seem to know about it.

Stats Demonstrating SEO/SEM Improvement
by Jill Whalen - We are interested in determining the real efficacy of SEO/SEM as it translates into online unit sales growth or online revenue growth. I have searched through many, many sites and haven't been able to come up with any good stats that demonstrate B2C improvements in eCommerce sales after applying SEO/SEM.

A Little Advice for Google AdSense Publishers
Loren Baker has a useful post over at Search Engine Journal that discusses the possibility of rotating AdSense and Google "Related Links" in and out on various spots on your web site. The idea is to attract users to the useful content that can come with related links and to use that attraction to make them more likely to click on the AdSense ads when they happen to be what's running. While it sounds like a good idea in theory, Loren goes on to point out a few reasons why you might want to think twice before revamping your site.

Q&A: Launching a Product to Bloggers
Every now and then I get a fairly interesting email question from a reader. One came in last week asking about the proper way to launch a new product or service among the blog community and when I answered it, the reader suggested that it might make for a good blog post. He had a good point, so every now and then, I'll be posting a Q&A style post here on the Search Engine Guide blog.

Google Shuns the Canadians?
Uh oh...this just seems a little looney to me. Jennifer Slegg reports that Google is apparently refusing allow Canadian (and Mexico and South American) companies to become "Qualified Google AdWords Professionals." They can qualify on an individual level, but not as a company. This, despite the fact that Google is happy to certify companies in places as remote as Azerbaijan, Chad, Kyrgyzstan and Tunisia.

Business Travel Bloggers Are Shaking up the Industry
It's only a matter of time before the entire world starts to get it, but it seems that the travel industry is the latest to catch on. What is "it?" The idea that bloggers are changing the way that companies do business, including the way that they relate to their customers. The New York Times has a great article today that discusses the way some travel companies are starting to interact with bloggers and the various ways in which it's paying off.

Yahoo! Resorts to Bribery?
As part of a new media blitz aimed at promoting their search and portal site, Yahoo! is apparently going to offer up a free cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee to any user that sets Yahoo! as their home page on Friday. (Guess that mean that those already loyal to the engine need to switch their home pages over to Google or Ask before then so that they can switch back...)

Five Steps to a Better Blog
I've been getting a lot of emails lately asking for tips and information gears specifically toward blogging. From how often to post to what style of content to create, business owners and hobby bloggers alike seem to be filled with questions about what direction to take their new blogs. That's why a post over at the Pronet Advertising by Neil Patel really caught my eye.

Matt Cutts in an Egg Shell
Yeah, yeah, so it's supposed to be a nut shell, but that one just doesn't fit. So, I'd suggest that you head over to the SEO Egghead blog where you can read an excellent recap of 21 search marketing tips offered up by Google's Matt Cutts.

Learning About .edu Links
A post over at Andy Beal's blog reminds me that I should be reading Eric Ward's blog on a regular basis. Thankfully he did and I do and now I can share a link to a great article that explains what the deal is with .edu links.

Yahoo! Testing New Checkout Icons in Paid Search Ads
Not too long after Google began testing the display of a checkout icon on paid search ads from companies offering payment via Google Checkout, Yahoo has been spotted doing the same thing. Since Yahoo and eBay partnered up earlier this year to make PayPal the preferred payment option of Yahoo Stores, so it's likely that this is a way for Yahoo to highlight shops offering PayPal.

Google Strikes Deal with Intuit to Attract Small Business Advertisers
Matt Bailey points to the announcement that Google will be pairing with Intuit in order to offer quick and easy access to tools like Google AdWords and Google Maps business listings. The deal will also offer speedy access to upload product inventories into Google Base. It's an interesting pairing and is likely to receive quite a bit of attention, but I can't help but wonder if there's a chance that this will do more harm than good for Google.

Discussion Threads of the Week
(Links to search engine forum discussion threads that deal with search engine marketing topics. Each listing provides the topic, the source, and a brief snippet from the discussion.)

Does Canada Really Exist?
Search Engine Watch Forums - "We recently tried to apply to be a Qualified Company in the Google Advertising Professionals program. According to their site, and the rep who emailed us, you have to be in the U.S. or in a EMEA country. We were informed, very politely, that we can't qualify because we are located in Canada. Yes, despite the fact that I could literally leave my desk right now and walk to Google's Toronto sales office, we don't really exist in Google's eyes."

Yahoo! On A Drive To Be Your Homepage
Webmaster World - "Feeling the pressure, Yahoo! turns to alternative media to push its brand."

Does Google Treat "Hacker Safe" Sites Differently?
Cre8asite Forums - "Could links from bonafide scanning companies be worth more like the way some people feel links from edu. sites are more valuable in weight for Google ranking."

MSN Search Vs Windows Live Search: What's The Difference?
Search Engine Watch Forums - "Danny Sullivan offers a cynical opinion on the rebranding of MSN Search and the new Windows Live Search, and members discuss the differences between the two services."

Adsense On Home Page - Does It Cheapen The Look?
Webmaster World - "The big guys do it, but is it appropriate for the smaller site still going through a branding process?"

Using Tag Clouds on Website Harmful to SEO?
Site Reference Forums - "I guess I am confused because to me this seems like an obvious effort to stuff keywords at the top of the site for SEO benefits... The point of Tags in my mind was to enable individuals the ability to categorize their site and individual pages..."

Which Web Services Do You Use?
Cre8asite Forums - "Around the forum web services and hosted software get talked about regularly. Makes me curious though which ones we're actually using."

Mining the Tail?
Search Engine Watch Forums - "Marketing on the longtail is only important if you want to increase your conversion rate, while decreasing your costs. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it."
