Hi Everyone,

Jennifer had her baby! Jennifer Laycock is Search Engine Guide's editor and she gave birth to a beautiful baby boy named Emmitt. Check out this thread to see pictures and to congratulate Jennifer. Be sure and check out the picture of Jennifer holding Emmitt just after giving birth. She looks like she just got done filing her nails or something instead of having just given birth to a 9 pound, 7 ounce baby! :-)

Have a great week!

Search Engine Marketing Articles

It's Not What You Say, It's How You Say It
by Matt Bailey - Visitors are welcomed by your navigation as the primary means of traveling your website. Your navigation can be friendly and lead them to the answers they seek, or it can be confusing and not provide any indication of where to go. Considering that keywords are an anchor to your business and search engine ranking, I can't understand why someone would dedicate prime navigation space to two words that do not mean anything.

B2B: Know Your Roles
by Manoj Jasra - When providing services such as Search Marketing strategies to large B2B tech firms you will find that there are several levels of management to please (this is the case for many large corporations). With above average sales cycles and the focus to produce quality leads it’s important to establish the right metrics to satisfy all levels within the company.

Hurry up and Do Nothing for Measured SEM Success
by Stoney deGeyter - Search engine marketing is simultaneously an intense game of taking action to increase sales while also a patient intermission of waiting to see the results. There is almost always something that can be done to improve your site and your search rankings, but after making specific changes you must be patient enough to wait for the results of those changes to come back and be compared against the previous changes.

Clients Who Think They Know SEO
by Jill Whalen - In cases where a client is smarter than you are about SEO, insists on saturating his keyword pages at 5%, and currently consistently hits in the top 20 on his Google searches. Is there any tactful way a copywriter can tell this kind of client that he may be destroying his currently high ranking when he implements these new "search friendly" pages?

Supplemental Results
by Ross Dunn - Supplemental results are generally pages that Google has determined to be secondary to other, more relevant pages that Google has indexed on your website. In effect, supplementary results are actually a secondary database of results that are only called upon when the most obscure queries force Google to check all its indexed resources.

A Place for Pay per Call
by Gord Hotchkiss - Pay per Call is an alternative channel that’s growing rapidly. The Kelsey Group estimates the Pay per Call market will more than double for the next five years, with revenues topping 3.7 billion by 2010. That makes it a revenue producing opportunity that more and more online publishers are beginning to pay attention to.

It’s a Boy! – Going on Maternity Leave
Just wanted to make a post and let our readers know that I had my baby at home (yes, as planned) on Thursday, September 28th. Emmitt Charles Laycock showed up a couple of days early at 11am weighing 9 pounds, 7 ounces and measuring 20 and a half inches long. He and I are both fine and the whole family is looking forward to me having a nice break from work for a bit. Yep, you heard me...I'm actually taking some maternity leave.

Holiday Hate for Google Coming Soon?
WebProWorld Forum - "The holidays are coming and anyone in online marketing knows that something else could be in store for many website owners. Instead of turkey, time with friends and family and general Christmas cheer, the chance of Google update to play games with our minds is always a possibility during this time of the year. As we have seen over the past few years Google seems to roll out big updates right before the important online holiday shopping season."

What Is a "Good Editorial Policy" for a Directory?
Webmaster World - "Take all comers = bad, right? So, what makes for a good editorial policy? Control of the wording of the listing resides with the directory? Listings must only appear in the relevant section, determined by the directory? What else?"

Is Flash The Future Of The Internet?
WebProWorld Forum - "...pieces of Flash on websites are a great thing and can really become link bait itself, but to say Flash is the future of the internet is not true. As BJ pointed out 33% of the world is still on dial up and as Jim pointed out flash entry pages are a terrible idea and pages composed entirely of flash are SERP [search engine results pages] poison."

Best Way To Building A New Site
High Rankings Forum - "I am building a new site - and am at the planning stage. What is a top tip that someone can give me to layout the site in an SEO friendly fashion... I know about clean url and clean navigation etc... anything else?"

New Trends in Google Rankings?
