Widgets Live! - The First Conference Focusing on Widget Economy
Niall Kennedy and Om Malik introduce the first ever conference on the emerging widget economy - Widgets Live!. Typically a widget is a generic term that people use to replace another "fill in the blank" term but in this case widgets consist of all the new little components and tools within the desktop, personal homepages, blog sidebars, social networking sites, mobile, and even dedicated hardware. The date is Monday, November 6, 2006 with the locale being San Francisco, California.

Yahoo!'s Digital Time Capsule
We've probably all contributed to a time capsule one time or another in our lives. You know, it is when a group of people compile things from their time and typically place it in some kind of box or chest and then bury it for future generations to later discover.

Yahoo! has decided to put together the first ever digital time capsule. What will it include? Photos, writings, videos, audio, drawings - anything digital, all to be submitted by users. They are accepting submissions now with the deadline to submit content set at November 8. In addition to submitting your own content, you can view, read, hear and even comment on the images, words and sounds contributed by users from around the world.

Web Analytics Are Useless Without Action and Accountability
Web analytics programs will reveal a lot about how your web site is performing. Programs have advanced past the stage of simply providing number of hits and unique visitors data to things like "which navigational link receives the most clicks" on any given page of your site. Now you can even learn not only where you might rank for a random phrase in a search engine but where you rank for key phrases that actually bring visitors to your site. However, all of this information is useless unless you actually act upon it. Jason Burby explores this issue in "Web Analytics: Are People on Your Team" over at ClickZ News.

Google Agrees To Acquire YouTube for a Record 1.65 Billion Dollars
It has been speculated all last week. Some thought it was just rumors but many news sources just confirmed it including Google's own press release. Google will acquire the rapidly arising video sharing start, YouTube for $1.65 billion all stock deal. The price makes YouTube, a still-unprofitable startup, by far the most expensive purchase made by Google during its eight-year history. It is over three times what News Corp paid for MySpace only a year and a half ago.

Business.com Launches New Business Site - Work.com
I just received an email from Business.com announcing a new site - Work.com, a Web 2.0 site built for business. The site features unique "How-to Guides" for more than 1,000 business topics, ranging from start up basics to advanced management techniques. The Guides are written by business experts who can now share their expertise with others within a community of business experts. Seems like a pretty cool concept. Part Wikipedia, part directory, part blog.

Google Music Deals To Benefit Web Publishers?
Google has announced two new music deals that have the potential to benefit web publishers running AdSense. The two press releases announce that Google signs agreement with Sony BMG Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group to offer Google Video users music video content. How exactly will these play out for web publishers? Essentially it is a new way for fan sites or sites having anything to do with music to earn revenue from AdSense.

Things NOT To Do When Marketing Yourself on Web Forums
I am pretty active on forums throughout the week when not overloaded with work. Because of my involvement in forums, I have enjoyed all of the following benefits one time or another - acquiring more information on a specific subject, collaborate with my peers, receive feedback on marketing tactics, business techniques, products or even a particular service, become part of a community and of course... to market myself.

Should Age of Target Audience Determine Online Marketing Strategy?
According to a new study released by Forrester Research, the answer is yes. The study suggests that marketers looking for the best way to reach a specific target audience should consider generational differences in search and media consumption habits. Which generational groups are we talking about here? Generation Yers (18-26), Generation Xers (27-40) and young (41-50) and old Baby Boomers (51-61).

Don't Forget About Your Users When Designing
This is easier said then done and often overlooked when designing a web site. I don't know how many sites I have come across in my almost ten years in this business that completely left their users out of the picture. The business may be worried about search engine visibility, design aesthetics or even actual web traffic but then wonder why the site does not convert well. Yahoo Publisher Blog has a very good article on the subject of "designing your web site with users in mind." And not just what "you think" they might want but conducting actual research.

18 Things To Consider When Building a Website
It is so much easier to build a web site the right way from the ground up, taking not only usability into account but search marketing as well. Otherwise you find yourself in what seems like a never-ending process of retrofitting, re-optimizing, re-designing, etc. This is good planning is key. Laying a good foundation will help ensure a successful web site. With this though in hand, Todd Mailcoat (aka Stuntdbl) has written an excellent article on this subject entitled "18 Questions Your CEO Forgot to Ask When Building Your Website." Read on for the list in bullet format as well as a link to article in full.

It's Not What You Say, It's How You Say It
Visitors are welcomed by your navigation as the primary means of traveling your website. Your navigation can be friendly and lead them to the answers they seek, or it can be confusing and not provide any indication of where to go. Considering that keywords are an anchor to your business and search engine ranking, I can't understand why someone would dedicate prime navigation space to two words that do not mean anything. (skip to "It's Not What You Say, It's How You Say It" by Matt Bailey)

B2B: Know Your Roles
When providing services such as Search Marketing strategies to large B2B tech firms you will find that there are several levels of management to please (this is the case for many large corporations). With above average sales cycles and the focus to produce quality leads it’s important to establish the right metrics to satisfy all levels within the company. Google To Acquire YouTube for $1.65 Billion

SEO - What Skills Are Crucial?
Search Engine Watch Forums - "A classic conversation about what skills an SEO consultant should have in order to provide the best results."

Automated Content Access Protocol Launch

When Are SEO Firms Going To Offer Link Baiting Services?
Small Business Ideas Forum - "...since link baiting is among the favorite methods used by SEOs to promote their own sites, why isn't it being offered by SEO firms as a service to clients?"

Google Gadgets Now For Your Website
Webmaster World - "The top of the widget is branded to the developer, the bottom is branded to Google. There are more than 1200 of them so far, and I expect that number to go through the roof as developers attempt to use Google for distribution."

Google Code Search
Cre8asite Forums - "How do you rank for code-search? Since your code is usually only linked from very few places within your own site (and hardly ever from the outside directly) I expect the influence of your own sites general value ("PR" if you will) is a strong factor. Within the code it's hard to determine important sections (no headers, no bold, etc.) but perhaps they take the frequency? How do they determine if a piece of code is relevant for your search term or not?"

Google Base, Is anyone using it?
High Rankings Forum - "It's taken me most of a day to get my head around this, and I have just realised how the ads will appear. I'm want to use this for a client, but cannot find any data on the effectiveness, and I'm not sure they will want to do something (or pay for my time to) if they cannot see a basic idea of effectiveness."

Relevant Domain Names
Small Business Ideas Forum - "I think you can create brandable domain names that make use of a keyword or two, but if the choice was between using a keyword rich domain and a brandable domain I would always opt for the brandable one."

SEO : The Game and the Claims!
V7N Forum - "Some people just don't want to see that online marketing isn't about magic formulas and that they might actually have to build a good site and then spend the time to promote it in a way that ties in with what their business is about."

Role of Statistics(/Foreign Languages) in SEO/SEM?
Search Engine Watch Forums - "A new member is interested in the data mining and statistical aspects of SEM, as well as the impact of multiple languages as a factor of user behaviors and search engine algorithms."

All In One Solution For Phone, Fax and Voice Mail
"I was thinking of just getting one of those 'virtual' office systems that offers a toll free number with voice mail. I can get a cheap one for like $10/month that just lets the person leave a message and I can call back using my cell phone. Any suggestions, ideas?"
