Search Engine Marketing Articles

Web Analytics Comparison – Google vs. VisiStat
by Manoj Jasra - VisiStat has now been collecting data on my blog for about a month and a half and I thought, rather than simply talk about VisiStat's product features and its pros & cons, it would be better to compare it to another reputable product in the industry: Google Analytics.

Whom Can You Trust?
by Jill Whalen - In search marketing, trust issues are further magnified by the fact that the industry is still in its infancy and there are no set rules or regulations. Let's face it, you'd be hard pressed to get a handful of SEO consultants to agree on a definition of SEO.

Will Longer Keyphrases Hinder the Effectiveness of Your Copy?
by Karon Thackston - Longer search phrases are the natural progression of the Internet population boom. As more and more information is placed online, it becomes increasingly difficult to find exactly what you're looking for. The best advice I can give is to break up some of the mentions of longer keyphrases.

10 Rules for Making B2B Search Marketing more Successful - Pt2
by Gord Hotchkiss - Using search as a B2B lead gen channel provides some unique challenges, but it can be very powerful. These are purchases that require a significant amount of online research. We know that's a perfect fit for search, but just be prepared to be patient for the pay off.

What’s Brent Winters Been up to Since Selling WebPosition Gold?
by Robin Nobles - Anyone in the search engine industry has heard of WebPosition Gold, which was created by Brent Winters and his company, FirstPlace Software. No one can dispute the success of WebPosition. Brent and his team had a handle on the industry and on his target audience, and he gave us all what we wanted in his software.

Investing in SEO: Clients vs. SEOs
by Stoney deGeyter - When it comes to purchasing an SEO package, it all comes down to how much are you willing to pay per hour, and how many hours do you want to invest in your website's promotion efforts? While many SEOs charge a package price, how much goes into that package is determined by how many hours of their time the SEO is willing to invest, and for how much.

Your Search Engine Optimization Company--Protecting Your Time and Your Brand
by Scott Buresh - If your internal resources are already strained to the breaking point, you are probably considering outsourcing your SEO efforts. The search engine optimization company that you select should have the capability to handle all aspects of the project with minimal involvement from your company to save you time and keep your branding strategy intact.

B2B Online Marketing - Dealing with Increasing Amounts of Competition
by Jody Nimetz - It is becoming increasingly difficult for businesses to be found by the right person, especially seeing as Google has replaced book cases of catalogues and rolodexes of business cards. Online competition means that B2B marketers need to position their companies in the best search engine, the best ranking, for the best query.

Put SEO in Your Site Design
by Bruce Clay - Research also reveals that the top search listings convey brand equity to users, another good reason for achieving high rankings in the SERPs. Search engine optimization (SEO) techniques produce top rankings in the SERPs, yet many web developers and designers do not take the time or do not know how to properly optimize a site for high rankings.

Click Fraud Series : Defining the Context of a Problem
by Jim Hedger - This is the first piece in an ongoing series on Click Fraud. Many in the search marketing and search advertising industries would prefer the issue be avoided altogether. Paid search advertising has grown to become a rapidly expanding multi-billion dollar industry, much of it based on the success of PPC.

Search Engine Guide Blog Posts

Yahoo Releases Panama
The buzz in the SEO/SEM world this morning is that Yahoo has released their long awaited "Panama" version of their search advertising (read: PPC) system.

Content or Links? You Need Both
Ian McAnerin has a great post over on his Manic Meanderings blog about how to attract and keep visitors (and links) to your site.

Seven Things Clients Look for In an SEO, Part II
Part two of four of Seven Things Clients Look for In an SEO: Longevity, Trust and Assurances.

Balanced SEO Keyword Targeting
I'm of the mind that any targeted keyword is a good keyword. I don't much care for KEI numbers, or even looking at the competition level for any keyword, though this information has its place over the course of optimization and setting realistic expectations. But when it comes to finding which keywords to optimize and which keywords to leave out, I'm of the opinion that if it brings targeted traffic its a keyword worth optimizing for.

Seven Thinkgs Clients Look for in an SEO, Part I
Every now and then I see an article written about what people should look for when selecting an SEO provider to manage their web site's online marketing campaign. Most of these articles written by SEOs, or those intimately familiar with the industry, provide valuable insights of (what the author believes are) some of the most important aspects of the selection process.

Web Analytics Comparison – Google vs. VisiStat

Incisive Media Distributes List of 500+ Email Addresses
Last week I received an email from Incisive Media regarding a Search Engine Strategies Webinar sponsorship. The email was an advertisement explaining all the great things about sponsoring their webinars and was apparently sent to me and about 520 other recipients. How do I know this? Because they neglected to keep their email list private!

WikiSpamia: The Art of Spamming Wikipedia
While it hasn't happened yet, Wikipedia is thinking of creating a spammers list to call out people who routinely try to insert links to their site(s).

Google Algorithm Released (Not Really)
The Google algorithm is a closely guarded secret. Last week a post at Digital Point forums started a conversation about why the algo hasn't yet been leaked to the world. Rand at SEOmoz followed this up with a brief post of his own conjecturing how the industry would change should such a leak occur. His conclusion: not much.

When Do Search Engine Rankings Become Useless?
Measuring success via search engine rankings isn't completely useless, but it's getting to be, and fast. There have been a number of times I've been on the phone with a client when they wanted to discuss their rankings but when we both perform the same searches on Google we'd get a different set of results. We've had similar things happen even from multiple computers in the same office. So what does this mean? It means that search engine rankings aren't what they used to be!

"No More Free Press Releases," says PRWeb
The free ride is over, that is free press release distribution via PR Web. This according to email sent out last night to PRWeb account holders. PRWeb has always offered free press release distribution with paid options as well. The paid options ensured more distribution channels. With the removal of the free option, they have three new paid options, SEO for $80, SEO with Social Media for $120 and Advanced Online Visibility for $200. read on for details of each plan.

Are Your Web Pages Haunted - That Is With Grammar Errors?
Robin Nobles gives us ten common grammar errors that typically haunt web pages. In a day and age where web sites are so often the storefronts for businesses, it is important to not only having correct spelling in place but proper grammar as well. After reading through some of the items on the list I realized that I might be guilty one or two. Yikes! Better comb through my web sites and check the copy.

Google Introduces Multiple Channels For AdSense Ad Units
Google has announced that it is now possible to assign multiple custom channels to a single AdSense ad unit. This new feature enables publishers to track ad performance with greater flexibility and view more granular information. When generating ad code, AdSense publishers will be able to add up to 5 custom channels to a specific instance of ad code. These custom channels will reside under main channels as I understand it.

Let the Copyright Fights Begin! Google's First Battle Over YouTube Copyright Issues
We all saw it coming. With Google's acquisition of YouTube this week, many speculated that the search giant could very well face a string of lawsuits over copyright issues. Not even a week has passed since the big news and the first potential copyright lawsuit rears its ugly head. Who is the first contender? None other than Time Warner. Dick Parsons, chairman and chief executive of Time Warner, says his group would pursue its copyright complaints against the video sharing site YouTube.com.

Search The Web on Your Cell Phone With Ask.com Mobile
Ask joins mobile search with its release of Ask.com Mobile which allows cell phone users to utilize many of Ask's search products directly from their phones. Ask.com Mobile includes numbered shortcuts to access tools more quickly, remembers recent queries so you don’t have to retype them, and squeezes web pages down to fit your phone’s screen so you can actually access and read them.

Who Is In Control of Your Online Reputation?
ClickZ's Patricia Hursh has an interesting article on managing your online reputation. She looks at the power consumers have in this day and age of blogs, review sites and the like to either build up a company's reputation online or damage it. Add to that the increasing number of people that go to search engines to learn more about a particular company and we have a situation where more and more business owners are concerned with what the consumer might find there.

Blog Juice Calculator - Give It a Squeeze
The fine folks over at Text Link Ads have developed a new tool that reveals how much "juice" your blog has. Simply enter your blog's URL into the Blog Juice Calculator, select a category and wait for the results. The calculator ranks your blog with a score ranging from 1-10, 10 being the highest and also allows you to compare your blog to other's based on RSS subscribers, Alexa, and Technorati rank and links.

New Study on the Convergence of Social Media and E-Commerce
ClickZ has an analysis of a new study released by market research firm Compete, which looks at the convergence of traditional e-commerce and social media. The report which coins the phrase "social commerce" or "s-commerce" for short, finds consumer visits to social networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook and YouTube, have increased 109% since January 2004 and page views per visitor have grown by 414% in the same time frame. So how can marketers obtain success in this new medium of social commerce? Read on to find out.

Zoho Virtual Office Launched at Office 2.0 Conference
In lieu of Google's Docs & Spreadsheets launch today, Marshall Kirkpatrick of TechCrunch reports that online productivity company Zoho has finally brought all its various services together into one offering with the release of the Zoho Virtual Office at the Office 2.0 conference. The new application will be a combination of Zoho's 10 plus products as well as some new apps such as Webmail and online calendaring. Another challenger to Microsoft's long held monopoly on productivity products - I like it!

Google Launches "Google Office", Well Almost
What many have referred to as the future "Google Office" is actually called "Docs & Spreadsheets" and was officially launched today. This new product offering is actually a combination of the Writely and Google Spreadsheet product silos into a single control panel and admin area. Before this, documents created in Writely and in Google Spreadsheets lived separately but now are combined. This and other online office suites such as Zoho and ThinkFree continue to challenge the monopoly Microsoft has held for some many years.

How Will Google Monetize YouTube?
Now that the dust is settling from the news of Google acquiring YouTube, many are curious as to how Google will actually make money off the web property. Even though YouTube has existed for a couple of years, it has yet to become profitable. Will Google just throw AdSense on all the pages? Maybe place commercials before the free videos? How about charging fees for certain video content? Jennifer Slegg has an excellent write-up providing her thoughts of what Google might do to monetize their newly acquired property. Read on for a few excerpts and link to full article.

Yahoo! To Join MSN and Google in Supporting NOODP Tag
Yahoo will finally support the NOODP tag, at least according to Tim Mayer who announced this after being questioned about it by Barry Schwartz on The Pulse last night. This following MSN and Google's support of the tag earlier this year. What is the NOODP tag anyway? It is a meta tag that allows a web site owner to opt out from having the search engines display the Open Directory information in the organic SERPs. Many of us have been waiting for Yahoo to follow suit because there are times that the Open Directory information will be displayed for a site as opposed to the site's title tag and either snippet of content or meta description tag for the actual description.
