Search Engine Marketing News - 2007-02-07

Hi Everyone,

I've said it before and it's worth repeating. One of the top 3 smartest decisions I've made for our company was starting an email newsletter. If you haven't set up a newsletter, or just need a better provider, this week's advertiser is for you. Take advantage of VerticalResponse's free trial and you'll thank me for doing so this time next year. :-)

The next free webcast from the Search Engine Land crew is scheduled for February 15 at 1 PM EST/6 PM GMT. The topic is Online Publicity and Link-Building and the speaker is Eric Ward. A bit of trivia... do you know who did Amazon.com's original link building campaign? Yep, Eric Ward. I like Eric because even though he is a major star in the online marketing world he is a really friendly guy. Anyway, here's a description of the event...

In a world where everyone has a web site, how can you get attention, traffic and links to yours? After all, what good is a great site if nobody knows about it? In this educational webcast, Eric Ward gives tips on how to build links, buzz, and publicity.

No matter how large or small your business is, there are venues, nooks, and crannies in the online world where you'll want to be seen. Find out how you can reach these - and what it takes to build an effective linking strategy.

The webcast is free but you need to register to reserve your spot.

Have a great week!

Robert Clough

Online Key Performance Indicators in 2007
by Jody Nimetz - Time and time again I have seen organizations measure metrics that do not accurately indicate success areas in their online campaigns as they relate to ROI. Quite often it seems as if the online key performance indicators are not aligned with the company's overall KPIs being measured.

The Importance of Search in Internet Marketing
by Claudia Bruemmer - Search is more popular than display ads and email marketing because of its excellent performance and ROI. Internet marketers should take note of the development in the search marketplace in order to better focus their advertising budgets.

Customer Personas: Who’s Your Website Talking to?
by Erin Lashbrook - Your company probably thinks of its website as an Internet marketing brochure, but, in fact, it is much more than that. It is the interaction that online customers have with your company, no different in their minds than if they had called your 800 number and spoken with a sales representative

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
by Stoney deGeyter - True success doesn't come easily but requires patience, determination, hard work and sometimes even personal sacrifice. If you do want to succeed and are willing to put forth the effort, here are seven steps to success in business and in life.

Landing-page Dilemma
by Jill Whalen - Until recently, whenever we sent out email flyers about our programs, we had the link go directly to the program's unique page on our website. Our marketing director has been trying to make a case for sending the clicker to the landing page that would then direct the clicker to a list of programs, including the one on which he or she clicked.

The Social Fabric of Search
by Gord Hotchkiss - There seems to be a lot of buzz around social search but exactly how is social search shaping our search experience and why we should be looking at it in the future? We're going where we haven't been before and it helps us when people who share our interests can guide the way.

Designing a Search Engine Friendly Web Site
by Danielle Sahiner - Designing a search engine friendly web site is not complicated, but it requires dedication and constant communication between the graphic designer, content developer and SEO analyst, as well as special attention to the site's architecture. Site architecture should not be an afterthought, nor should SEO.

An Interview with Expert Web Copywriter Scott Smith
by Ross Dunn - The fact is web copywriting is a perfect mate with search engine optimization and this has been the case ever since SEO became a reality. After all, as an SEO it is abundantly clear to me that getting people to your website serves no purpose unless they can be converted into sales; which is where a great copywriter comes in.

Siloing Revisited
by Lisa Barone - In its simplest terms, siloing is a site architecture technique used to split the focus of a site into multiple themes. The goal behind siloing is to create a site that ranks well for both its common and more-targeted keywords.

Why Traditional Marketers Should Adopt SEM
by Scott Orth - Search Engine Marketing allows you to track details only dreamt of in traditional marketing channels; traffic sources, visitor paths, conversion/leads per ad, Cost per acquisition – per ad campaign; even per search term! exact ROI per campaign, and much more. After analyzing these details, you can then modify your ads to best harness the highest performing campaigns.

Internet Community Bands Together to Search for Jim Gray
Last week, Microsoft database pioneer Jim Gray went missing after heading out on a solo sailing trip on January 28th. The Coast Guard called off it's own search last week after four days, but the Internet community has picked it up as a collective effort using Google Earth's satellite-mapping data to allow volunteers to scan the area of the Ocean where Gray was last seen. Interested in lending a hand? Join the efforts through Amazon's Mechanical Turk.

Google Switches Users to Personalized Search
No, it's not the end of SEO, but I'm sure at least a few folks will begin shouting that message from the blogtops this week. What am I talking about? Google's decision to force personalized search results on anyone that searches while logged in to their Google account. While some may be happy about this, most of the folks that I've read are not. In fact, I've now logged myself out of my Google account for everyday searching.

Ask.com Blog Team Takes a Stab at Google
I wrote this past summer about how I've been keeping a much closer eye on the team over at Ask.com. They've done an excellent job offering up some unique search products, especially in the local search realm. Turns out that they've also got a very good sense of humor. If you find yourself in need of a chuckle this morning, head over to the Ask.com blog and read Ken Grobe's post about their frustration with Google product failures.

Google Provides (Almost) Accurate Backlink Information
Google Webmaster Central has just releases a tool that allows you to check your site's backlinks. Hows that different from the link: operator? Well, this one actually works!

Wordtracker Offers Free Keyword Suggestion Tool
Wordtracker, the popular subscription based keyword research tool used by many professional search marketers, has announced a new free keyword suggestion tool that offers search estimates on up to 100 keyword phrases at a time. While the tool lacks many of the more powerful research features of Wordtracker's paid service and the subscription service offered by Trellian's KeywordDiscovery.com, it does serve as a powerful way for small business owners to find out what variations of a phrase are being searched.

Yahoo! Panama Platform Launches Today
This afternoon at 3pm PST, the world of Yahoo! paid search advertising will forever change. Yahoo! will begin switching customers from their current "bid for position" platform to the new "Panama" platform which more closely resembles Google AdWords' popular "quality score" system. It's a big move for the company and their future heavily depends on how well (or how badly) the migration goes.

Knowing How to Play in the Social Media Environment
While the issue of Pork and Breasts tries to work itself out, I thought it might be worth pointing to some coverage of a company that handled a potential Internet firestorm in an amazingly creative (and highly effective) manner. Chris Winfield has some great insight into the actions of Second Life owners Linden Labs when they realized that parody site Get a First Life had been launched.

When Internet Users Strike Back
Search Engine Guide readers seem to like it when I use real world examples to share information and insight about the world of online marketing. So today I'm going to do it, but I'm going to let you know that the real world example today is me, and the fact that The National Pork Board has threatened to take me to court. Why? Well, it's all about how easy the Internet has made it for overzealous lawyers to go hog-wild shooting off emails and threatening expensive court battles against anyone and everyone to get their way.

Link Request Flattery
The problem with most link emails is that there is never any real effort involved in getting the links. Just some generic crap about how they "really liked your site!" Wow. That's awesome! When I was contacted about getting the manuscript I was flattered that somebody wanted me to read their book and blog about it. Flattery is effective.

Can You Force the Conversation? Should You?
I've written my fair share of articles and posts lately blasting away against social media. That's why I thought it was a good idea to throw one out there that actually SUPPORTS the idea of social media. After all, as much as I can lament the way that it's promoted, the reality remains that social media is a powerful force...one that CAN be creatively harnessed to help improve both your brand and your bottom line. That's why an article published over at Advertising Age today leaves me wondering about how often the conversation is as important as the conversion.

Discussion Threads of the Week
(Links to search engine forum discussion threads that deal with search engine marketing topics. Each listing provides the topic, the source, and a brief snippet from the discussion.)

25 Signals of Poor Quality Sites
Webmaster World - "I realize that many of the list items would logically just be a perceived 'signal of quality' reversed but if we all dig down into our experience then this exercise just might bring up a few unique and useful insights. Here's a start..."

Google Lifts The Veil On Links ... A Little
Cre8asite Forums - "A post on the Google Webmaster Central Blog reveals that you can now learn more about the links that Google has indexed for your own site if you go to Google Webmaster Central. They don't reveal all but give many more than with the search for link:www.mysite.com Perhaps someone can explain why Google still keeps playing games like this."

Big Pork Post Lactivist
Cre8asite Forums - "If you were responsible for SEO/SEM, online promotions, brand management/monitoring, etc., for the Pork Board, what would you be doing now? Suddenly you're on the radar of search marketers and breastfeeding moms. Now what?"

Top 10 Key Search Factors in 2007?
Search Engine Watch Forums - "Share your predictions for search in 2007. What factors will most impact search marketers and the search industry as a whole?"

Bidding on someone else's trademark
High Rankings Forum - "I know how some people here feel about it, but so far the legal precedents say that it's ok as long as you are not creating confusion by representing yourself as that trademark. Google's policy is that you can't place the trademarked term in your ad copy, but bidding on the term is acceptable (read 'between you and the trademark holder'). They have won repeatedly in court over this."

Confused About Nofollow? So Is Google!
High Rankings Forum - "Did you know that Google supposedly doesn't crawl nofollows? My understanding was that they are to be used for untrusted links, not to keep Google's spider out of places. (There are already tags/attributes for that.) However, Google seems to keep changing what they want to use the nofollow attribute for."

AdWords Content Network Boost For New Ads
Small Business Ideas Forum - "I have noticed a strange phenomenon on AdWords. When I create a new ad it will receive a heavy hit on the google content network within two days. Then it goes to a low volume pace which is probably based on some value algorithm to google. It appears they give new ads a huge advantage over older ones."
