Search Engine Marketing Articles

What if Your Reputation Determined Your Rankings?
by Jennifer Laycock - I've been reading a bit about the new concept of Google's "Agent Rank" and their patent application while pondering how it might impact search. The basic idea here is that Google may be working on a way to tie content on the web to an individual and that Google might also establish a way to judge the reputation of the individual, and by extension, their content.

Understanding the True Value of a Resource Library for Your Website
by Scott Buresh - Many websites currently offer a resource library for visitors - an area filled with articles covering relevant topics to the industry with which the site is connected. While it's true that a resource library, on the surface, exists to benefit site visitors, it doesn't end there -- they also provide benefits that can directly impact any business.

Interview with Joe Herbert - "Crash the Super Bowl" User-Generated Commercial Finalist
by Paul Jahn - A few years ago, Joe Herbert and some of his brothers decided they wanted to make a movie. What they didn't expect was an impromptu detour to be a top-five finalist for a user-generated Super Bowl commercial contest.

Business Marketing Strategy: Are You Promoting Your Company's Expert?
by Brian Cooper - Every company has an expert (otherwise it wouldn't exist), but many companies still fail to realize the full value of this person's knowledge by integrating him or her into the company's business marketing strategy and promoting this expert in the media.

Search Engine Marketing Gets Personal Part One
by Jody Nimetz - According to the major search engines, one of their main goals is to provide relevant results and give the people what they want when they perform a search query. Well in order to give the people what they want, you have to listen to the people.

Does Article Syndication Amount to a Duplicate Content Penalty?
by Ross Dunn - Please keep in mind duplicate content is not an exact science or anything close to that. As I wrote this article, I often imagined exceptions where a penalty would or would not take place. That said the following answers are based on what my experience dictates to be the most common scenarios.

Time Tracking for Greater Productivity
by Stoney deGeyter - The time spent on billable activities is important information to know, and not just to have a better picture of the bottom line. How our time is spent affects both us and our clients. The more time we spend on unbillable activities the more we have to compensate by adjusting package pricing, but the less time we spend on billable activities, the less we are actually doing for our clients.

What Every SEO Copywriter Should Know about Creating Quality Copy for Search Engine Campaigns
by Marla Blair - The truth of the matter is, search engine copywriting is usually done by an outside SEO copywriter simply because when a company embarks on an SEO campaign, it does not have the resources or time to handle the copy internally. The best SEO firms will have an in-house copywriter available, while other firms may outsource the search engine copywriting.

Redirecting Non-www to Www Version
by Jill Whalen - I am surprised to see that your own website still has both the www and non-www version in place — no redirect to get the "link juice" from the non-www version. Do you consider this a not so important issue? Both versions have good PR.

How Very Sweet...and Wrong?
I always look forward to taking a peek at how Google logo artist Dennis Hwang will represent the latest celebration. Imagine my surprise when I looked at the temptingly delicious chocolate covered strawberry in today's Valentine's Day logo and noticed that something was wrong...very wrong.

Making Analytics Fun (No...really!)
I often present local search marketing seminars with my friend Matt Bailey of Site Logic Marketing. One of his best sessions is on web analytics and he's finally taken one of his best slides and turned it into a full length article. So what's the fuss all about? Well...Matt calls it "Analytics According to Captain Kirk." (Yes, he's a bit of a nerd...but stick with me, this stuff is good.)

Changing the Face of Advertising, 8 Seconds at a Time
A new company is about to change the face of off-line advertising as we know it. They are starting in the movie industry (and only for eight seconds at a time) but the implications of this will reach into every aspect of paper advertising and even into the digital photo market.

Achieving “Outsider” Status
Have you tried to break into the SEO elite and found it somewhat cliquish? You're not the only one. Aaron Pratt talks about the circular linking patterns of the SEO elites.

Promote Your Local Business Online for Free
Michael Gray has put together a great little list of thirteen ways that small businesses can promote themselves for free over at his Graywolf SEO Blog. While most of his suggestions apply to businesses with a local presence, there are still quite a few on there that will apply to any small business.

Search Engine Forum Discussions
Here the latest buzz from the forums...

ClickTracks Offers Pro for Small Businesses
Apparently, if you pester people long enough, they eventually give in. No, I'm not talking about the pork people, I'm talking about the team over at ClickTracks. While ClickTracks has always offered up great products at prices small businesses can afford, (heck, they even added a free version just to get me off their backs last year) they've done it again by announcing the launch of ClickTracks Pro SMB. (that's small/medium business to you acronymically challenged folks)

The Problem with Digg
You'd think that having just experienced hitting the front page of Digg myself (for the pork story last week) that I might have a personal reason for claiming that there's a problem with Digg. Actually, Digg seemed to work fairly well for me, though I've not yet finished analyzing the data from my logs. What I'm citing today as the "problem" with Digg is the experience that Danny Sullivan is having with getting one of his recent posts dugg.

Keyword Advertising Prices Continue to Climb
Fathom Online's latest update to their Keyword Price Index shows that the average cost of a keyword phrase on a paid search advertising campaign rose to $1.51 in the fourth quarter of 2006. That's up from $1.45 as the average price in the fourth quarter of 2005. Overall, not a bad increase which may show that things are starting to level out a bit.

Are You Digging too Deep with Web Analytics?
Last summer while I was in San Jose for the Search Engine Strategies event I had the pleasure of taking some time to visit with Intuit's Avinash Kaushik. Avinash is one of those rare people that simply oozes genius, but does it in a way that the average person can understand. That's why his blog, Occam's Razor, is a fantastic resource for small business owners trying to learn more about how to make use of their web analytics. He's got a great post today about making sure you aren't digging deep into your analytics at the cost of understanding how the more general stats impact how you run your business. It should really hit home for small business owners.

Search Engine Marketing Spending Nears $10 Billion
Last year, North American companies racked up approximately $9.45 billion in search marketing spending, according to a new report issued by SEMPO. As in prior years, the greatest bulk of that spending was aimed at paid search advertising while organic search marketing efforts made up just a little more than one tenth of total spending.

Greg and I will be taking about a variety of topics including social media marketing, my Lactivist hobby site and the controversy surrounding my legal battle with the National Pork Board last week. Discussion Threads of the Week
(Links to search engine forum discussion threads that deal with search engine marketing topics. Each listing provides the topic, the source, and a brief snippet from the discussion.)

Google AdWords Will Test CPC Site Targeting From March
Webmaster World - "According to Google's AdWords Team, there is a new BETA for advertisers wanting to test cost-per-click site-targeted campaigns. The new BETA will help advertisers with increased flexibility. If you are site targeting it allows advertisers to choosing the bidding option of most interest. In addition, it will be possible to create new CPC campaigns and switch between CPC and CPM."

Metrics - Is The Page View Dying As An Important Measure?
Small Business Ideas Forum - "Given today's use of RSS feeds and readers and the proliferation of blogs, is the Page View, the grande dame of metrics, going the way of the dodo? I personally think No, but we may need to redefine the value we place on it."

The Famous Landing Page
WebProWorld Forum - "It is an absolute necessity. If you use AdWords (or any other provider of PPC advertising) you have to have good landing pages. They make the difference between a successful AdWords campaign and a complete waste of time and money. Having the experience of turning AdWords campaigns from money burning into money generating machines, through the use of landing pages, has made me an absolute promoter of the Famous Landing Page. It literally can be the difference between “no sales” and “more sales than we can handle”."

Squidoo
V7N Forums - "...do you see any traffic to your site from Squidoo ? What is your CTR on adsense from squidoo visitors ? I was considering making a lens but I don't know if its worth it."

70% Of All Websites Are At Risk Of Being Hacked!
Cre8asite Forums - "Are you worried yet? You should be. It doesn't matter if you are high-profile or not, if you have interesting content or not. It's just about shear numbers, and about money. What can you do to prepare?"

Could Small Pages Rank Best in MSN?
Webmaster World - "WebmasterWorld members debate whether small pages rank better in MSN SERPs."

How To Relaunch Your Website
Cre8asite Forums - "My employer is getting ready to launch a new website (same domain, just a revamped site) and I’d really appreciate feedback on my migration plan. I realize some of this is probably pretty standard, but we have pretty good placement and traffic now and I’d like to do everything I can to mitigate problems that are going to occur in the SE’s with the launch of the new site (esp. loss of links and PR)."

What Could Be The Internet Marketing Plan For A Small Firm?
High Rankings Forum - "I wonder if you guys also face same problem as I face when dealing with enthusiastic small business entrepreneurs who have very limited funds but are open to experimentation. What could be the best mix for such kind of firms, if we have to provide them year long marketing plan for Internet marketing for small firms."

Redesign Top 10 Do's & Top 10 Don'ts!
High Rankings Forum - "We are about to embark on a redesign project and I'm trying to compile a high level top 10 do's/don'ts list. ...Any contributors to the list?"

Bringing SEM In-house
Cre8asite Forums - "To replace an established SEM agency, you're probably looking at hiring an SEO, a person to manage PPC, a talented designer (if you don't already have one), and a web developer ... and then managing the process of getting them all to work as a cohesive unit (something that the agency has already accomplished)."

SEO Training
High Rankings Forum - "I have seen a program from the SEO college and was wondering if this is something I should look into or find other means of furthering my career. If anyone has any friendly advice, please let me know."

Buying Text Links
High Rankings Forum - "I'm going to reluctantly dive into the world of paid links for one of my clients. Any suggestions as to the best strategy, methods for this and which are the most reputable site for buying links etc."

Recent Conversations In Our Small Business Forum
(If you like our search engine news, you'll love our small business news.)

HitTail - Keyword Reporting
"HitTail basically just analyzes your entire long tail keyword list and pulls out the ones where it thinks you can make the most ground in the least amount of time. In other words, take a suggestion, write about it in a blog post or optimized page, and go from X-pages in (which you were previously) to the first page or two. Keep that up over time, and you will grow a considerable amount of qualified natural search traffic."

Help! Slogan Needed
"...I still haven't been able to come up with a slogan for the company. Every time I come up with an idea it seems kind of dry. We sell seats in training seminars at the last minute for a deep discount. ...If anyone would like to give me any suggestions for a slogan I would appreciate it."
