Search Engine Marketing News - 2007-03-28

Hi Everyone,

A new version of our Small Business Guide to Search Engine Marketing is available today. Customers get free updates and I've emailed current customers on where to download the latest version. If you are a current customer and didn't get an email, let me know.

If you haven't picked up a copy of the ebook you can do so here. It's a fantastic resource that will help you quickly get grip on the world of search engine marketing. We provide free updates and a private forum for support after the sale for any questions you may have.

As always the focus is on teaching you about bringing in new customers, not just traffic. I guarantee you'll love it or I'll refund your money.

Have a great week!

Robert Clough

B2B Marketing in 2007: The Buying Funnel vs. Selling Process
by Jody Nimetz - B2B marketing can be, and most often is, a complex process. However, a complex process doesn't always require a complex solution. To me, complex means ambiguity and ambiguity means lack of clarity and direction. I find it frustrating when people take a complex process and make it more complex. Why not attempt to simplify the process?

8 Ways I Wish Being Offline Was Like Being Online
by Stoney deGeyter - Ever wonder what it would be like if we had all the conveniences of the Internet in the "real" world? I do. A lot, actually. Whether I'm sitting at a stop light, looking where I left my keys or just waiting in line at the grocery store, if we had the power of the Internet available to us I think our lives would be so much simpler.

Using Blog Search Engines to Build Links
by Jennifer Laycock - One of the questions that often pops up when I teach small businesses about link building is where to go to find sites to request links from. While most businesses understand the idea of going to directories and search engines and finding sites that way, many don't yet understand the power of using blog search engines to seek out blogs to target with your link building campaign.

Adobe's Apollo Offers Intriguing Marketing Capabilities
by Ross Dunn - What Impact Might Apollo Have on Online Marketing? This is my loaded question of the day because Apollo will conceivably extend interactive marketing Internet to both the online and offline desktop which opens a variety of doors.

K-Fed Up with Celebrity Skinned Search
by Gord Hotchkiss - You may have noticed earlier this week that K-Fed is actually launching his own search engine. Well, to be more accurate, he's slapping his face on an existing back end, so to speak. Personally, the more Federline-free my world is, the better.

Why Links Matter - Part 3
by Jennifer Laycock - Today, in the final installment of this series, I'll explain how search engines use links to determine the popularity and authority of a web site. We're used to listening to friends, family and authorities to help us shape our opinion about people, places, products and services...why wouldn't search engines try to do the same?

What Happened at RegisterFly and How to Protect Your Domains
by Ross Dunn - On March 16th, the International Corporation for Assigned Names & Numbers (ICANN) publicly de-accredited the domain registrar RegisterFly.com for fundamental contractual breaches. Perhaps this post will help you protect your domain(s) and ultimately your livelihoods from future train wrecks.

What's Important to Search Engines and What's Not
by Jill Whalen - I recently had an inquiry from someone who was looking for some possible SEO consulting with me. He was in the process of a redesign and wanted to be sure not to make any mistakes along the way, which is super-smart! The time to be looking at SEO is definitely in the beginning stage of any design or redesign project.

Hey Google: What Did You Do With My Alerts?
Within the last week or so Google updated their Google Alerts service to incorporate it with some of Google's other services. Somewhere in the process of the change they screwed up as over half of my Alerts are missing!

When Will Journalists "Get" Blogs?
Hmmm...consistent theme today... There's was an article by David Lazarus last Friday in the San Francisco Chronicle that talks about how the blog world can never compete with real journalists and that Internet users are going to have to suck it up and start paying for content. His argument? Traditional media reports the news like no one else. He's right...they do, but that doesn't mean people want to pay for it.

When Will Big Business "Get" Social Media?
It's a marketer's dream. Tap into the power of social media and user-generated video clips without taking on the risk of someone saying something negative about your brand. Advertise on a YouTube style video site, but with full editorial control over what videos are posted. Marketers like GM, Royal Caribbean and Esurance think it's a great idea. That's because they just don't get social media.

From Online to Offline - How Things Spread
A survey of more than 15,200 shoppers has turned up some interesting insight into how consumers share information that they've discovered online. The data, released by the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association (RAMA) looked at the most common ways that people spread the word about interesting products. It also looked at what types of offline channels were most likely to send people online for further research.

Do Music Downloads Spell the End of the Music Biz?
In reading an article about the plummeting of music CD sales believed to be caused by the increase in music downloads (purchased and pirated), I got to thinking about the music business in general. While most news stories and editorials talk about the effects of the music distribution industry, I can't help but wonder if this will effect the music industry as a whole--artists and fans included.

A Marketing Campaign Gone Wrong... Or Right?
Lionsgate films may have an unintentional hit on their hands. It appears that someone put up the wrong billboard campaign which many are finding objectionable.

Discussion Threads of the Week
(Links to search engine forum discussion threads that deal with search engine marketing topics. Each listing provides the topic, the source, and a brief snippet from the discussion.)

Yahoo Launches Mobile Ad Network & Publisher Services
Webmaster World - "The company is offering to help publishers retool their content so it can be accessed through Yahoo oneSearch, Yahoo's mobile search service for consumers. It is also launching a mobile advertising network that will serve syndicated ads beside the publishers' content."

PPC Keyword Analysis For Clients
Cre8asite Forums - "What I do is simple - screencap the search results on google, yahoo, et al, and then graphically analyze the results as though I were a potential customer looking for a product or service. Sounds simple, but can teach you a lot and allow your client to visualize the competition they have from other PPC and organic sources. Green circle shows real competition, yellow wave shows potential/weaker competition, red x shows results that should not be considered competition."

Personalized Search Interfaces
High Rankings Forum - "Is there anyone who can explain this to me in non-technical jargon? Is there anything new that I need to take into consideration when writing and optimizing my pages, other than what Jill has already taught?"

Optimizing Page Titles For "Generic" Pages
High Rankings Forum - "I've gotten pretty good at using keywords/phrases in page titles when the pages are about the company's products, services, etc. But I never know what to do with some of the standard type pages that come up over and over like "Contact Us" or "About Us" or legal disclaimers, etc."

Do We Already Have A Local Business Listing?
Cre8asite Forums - "A client of ours is currently at in the A position in Google Local Search for their business. ...I went to add them the Google's Local Business Directory, but then I hesitated. If they are at the top of Local Search, does this mean they already have a business listing? I signed into their Google account on the business listing page. All fields in this are at present, blank. Does this mean they have never been listed? If they had been listed, would the information be appearing on this page of the Local Business Center."

List Of Ranked Keywords For A Particular Website?
Cre8asite Forums - "I just wanna look at the ranked keywords list for my competitors. Is there any tool available to check the ranked keywords list?"

brainstorm: How might Google measure the site, and not just a page?
Webmaster World - "One thing we tend not to discuss here very often - and that I have heard Google reps mention over the past year or so - is that Google is devising more ways of looking at the entire domain, and not only assessing relevance url by url. This is my conjecture, but what if Google is now working with domain-wide semantic factors a bit more strongly than in the past?"

Will Social Networks and Vertical Search combine to challenge Google?
Search Engine Watch Forums - "Google’s major strength - the clean search box and the ease of use, commoditised ad revenues, perhaps masks its principal weakness. As media content and advertising revenues fragment to serve thousands and thousands of “vertical” online communities based on lifestyle or profession, Google may suddenly seem standardised, commoditised and lacking a sense of unique community. Is Google becoming Wal-Mart, while vertical communities may prefer Harrods?"

My Blog Log - Why Am I Doing This?
Cre8asite Forums - "What am I supposed to do with it? Why is it good to have 'contacts'? I feel I'm missing something...or maybe really all it is for is the avatar thing."

Google Crawling Css & Js Files
High Rankings Forum - "You are used to a MSDOS/Windows world where file associations are all important ( the file ext tells the OS the filetype). Other OSs, *nix and Mac OS notably, do not use, or even need, file extensions to identify the filetype or target application, and the file headers tell the OS everything they need to know about the file."

Yahoo names click fraud czar
Webmaster World - "Yahoo has promoted one of its staff attorneys to an executive-level position that is akin to being click fraud czar at the second largest Web search provider."

Getting People To Sign Up for Newsletter?
"I am having troubles getting people to sign up for my newsletter. I have a sign up on every page and also a pop up one on the home page. I also offer a free ebook with the sign up, but am not getting ANY sign ups! Help PLEASE!"

Use Of Forms Vs E-mail Link In Contact Page
"I'd like to hear opinions as to the use of forms (where a page is presented for you to fill in blanks) versus providing a simple mailto: link in order to provide a website visitor with means to contact us."

Buying Websites Vs. Creating From Scratch
"Has anyone bought an existing website an owner put up for sale? I'm creating a website and finding how much time and work this takes as opposed to just buying one. Any tips on buying?"
