Search Engine Marketing Articles

Systematic Theft - One Search Engine Optimization Company's "Nasty Surprise"
by Scott Buresh - Let's face it - any search engine optimization company knows that the industry has carried a collective black eye for many years. This is unfortunate, because there are many firms out there that do outstanding work and who must struggle for simple legitimacy simply because there are so many fly-by-night companies and snake oil salesmen out there.

Copywriting Makeover: Value vs. Vision - Part 1 of 2
by Karon Thackston - There's no doubt. Wholesalers USA knows their customers. They've spent the time digging through log files to analyze site stats. They've spoken with customers on the phone and emailed with them. They've used client feedback to develop new products that have taken off like a rocket. Wholesalers USA understands the importance of giving the customer what s/he wants. What they needed some help with was translating that message into natural-sounding SEO copy that would deliver qualified traffic.

Ask Goes on the Attack
by Jennifer Laycock - It's tough being the little guy...especially when you know you have a strong product that could likely compete with other companies, if only consumers would give you a chance. Ask.com has been playing catch-up to Google and Yahoo for most of the eleven years that it's been answering search queries and apparently, it's had enough. No more taking pot shots at Google via the Ask.com blog, this time it's all out war.

Social Media Marketing as Part of B2B Online Marketing Campaigns
by Jody Nimetz - Online communities have taken on lives of their own, often playing integral roles in vendor-to-consumer relations. But what impact does social media have on B2B transactions? How can B2B advertisers tap into social media concepts and this shift in media consumption?

6 Newbie SEO Questions
by Jill Whalen - Someone emailed me with a list of quick questions about some SEO terminology they didn't understand. I figured if one person was looking for these answers, many of you would be, too.

Inside Google's New Pay Per Action for Advertisers
by Jennifer Laycock - While many bloggers are focusing on the publisher side of Google's new pay-per-action program, I thought it might be a good idea to dive into the act of setting up a campaign. It's pretty straight forward if you've ever used the Google AdWords system, but here's a step-by-step walk-through of the process.

Search Engine Guide Blog Posts

Google, Yahoo, MSN add SiteMap Auto-Discovery
Simply by adding the following line of code into your robots.txt file, the engines will know where your sitemap is located on the server and pick it up on their routine crawls.

Ongoing Coverage of Search Engine Strategies NYC
If you aren't here in New York City for the Search Engine Strategies conference, never fear...you can still get complete coverage of nearly every session online. Barry Schwartz has once again put together an excellent reporting team and will have full session recaps up on his SEO Roundtable blog shortly after each session ends. I won't be speaking until Friday, but if you're here for the show, please stop by and introduce yourself.

When it Comes to Social Media, Think Old School
While social media is a reasonable new term to most marketers, the sites within the social media realm have often been around for quite some time. It's easy to focus your time and efforts on the current trendy "darlings" of the social media landscape, (umm...Digg anyone?) but most businesses would be far better served to focus their social media marketing on established sites like Yahoo Local Search or Amazon.com product reviews. That's not just me offering up the advice either, a new study from iProspect and Jupiter Research confirms it.

Wait, How Many Blogs Again?
David Sifry has released Technorati's latest "State of the Blogosphere" report today. Sifry's post tells us that Technorati is now tracking more than 70 million blogs. That's up from 51 million at their last report. He also points out that new blogs are coming online at the rate of 120,000 per day (or roughly 1.4 blogs per second.) Unfortunately, spam blogs are also coming online at a pretty strong rate. Technorati tracked the creation of more than 11,000 spam blogs (splogs) per day in the month of December.

Discussion Threads of the Week
(Links to search engine forum discussion threads that deal with search engine marketing topics. Each listing provides the topic, the source, and a brief snippet from the discussion.)

Who Else Gets Traffic from Google Images?
Digital Point Forums - "Does the traffic from images convert? Or do they just come for the images and leave?"

Best Blogs And Websites On Usability?
Cre8asite Forums - "I'm looking to add a Usability category to my website and would like to know your thoughts on which are the best:"

Deep Links
V7N Forum - "To build deep links I use Payperpost and sometimes forums and directories. How do you build links for your inner pages?"

Cost per Lead
Search Engine Watch Forums - "I'm trying to gather some info for a client call that I have coming up. They are asking for us to beat our previous marketing campaign results which were a 20% conversion rate and a $4.33 Cost Per Lead. I am trying to gather some CPL statistics in various market industries to show that the $4.33 CPL was a bit out of the norm and not generally within industry standard. Anyone got some info?"

Yahoo Alpha , Custom Personalized Search from Yahoo
Webmaster World - "We also decided to add a sharing element for logged in users of the site. Now, if you decide to share your personalised url with others, they can view and effectively use the search configuration you have developed."

Homepage Bouncers, 60%
Cre8asite Forums - "Despite running a Google AdWords campaign that brings considerable traffic to our e-commerce site - Google Analytics reveals a Bounce Rate of nearly 60%. I can only assume the copy on the homepage is not compelling enough or perhaps there is some other explanation for what seems like a very high level of bouncers?"

Creating A New Site Based On One Product?
High Rankings Forum - "We have a website with tips and advice about health products. The competition is quite tough in this field, but we have one product that is doing extremely well in search engines and other websites are starting to link to it as well. We are thinking about creating a whole new website for this product only, and there are a few variations on the product itself that we would promote and sell. Is this a good idea?"

Signs of Fundamental Change at Google Search
Webmaster World - "I'd like to collect people's observations about what 'signs of fundamental change' they've may have observed in recent months."

Ask Goes On The Attack
Small Business Ideas Forum - "We have the commercials up on the forum so everyone can watch them and see what all the fuss is about."

(If you like our search engine news, you'll love our small business news.)

Who Could Advertise on a Memorial Site?
"I used to have a client who was in the cremation business and I agree it can be a difficult area to tackle. Partly, I think it can be a factor of how you handle things ... and based on my experiences this isn't an area where you want to over think things."

Travel-related Blog Idea - Opinions Wanted
"The company I work for as a copywriter is preparing to launch a new product called Travel Safety Net. It's a roadside assistance program like AAA. I'm exploring the feasibility of a blog to support the product and to draw visitors to our website."

Free Html Or Xhtml Editor?
"I do not have the money right now to spend hundreds of dollars on one of the best editors and currently am using NVU. Does anyone know of any better free ones that I could try that would help to clean up my codes? Or even any suggestions?"
