Search Engine Marketing Articles

Ajax in a Nutshell
by Danielle Sahiner - If you haven't heard of it by name yet, you've probably already used it in one form or another. Google Maps, The Wall Street Journal Online, and Flickr, just to name a few Web sites, all use it. So what is Ajax and what does it do?

Search+ :: It's All In The Grinds
by BJ Cook - I just got into work this morning and as I suspected someone mentioned the word, "Starbucks." My eyes widened and I immediately went to the stock, Grande Soy Vanilla Latte with Add Shot for my order. Yet I hesitated and desired something different this morning. I went to my web browser and went to www.starbucks.com and low and behold, no online menu. Are you kidding me?

Can Yelp Help Your Small Business?
by Jennifer Laycock - Chance are high that you've never heard of Yelp, so you probably have no idea what it says about you. This is a mistake. More than 1.8 million users turn to it for information each month. It also ranks incredibly well on Google for a wide range of local search phrases. That's why I'll ask you again, what does Yelp say about you?

Social Media Marketing = MLM 2.0
by Todd Mintz - For the first time in many years, I had the privilege (misfortune) to receive (be tormented by) a Multi-Level Marketing presentation (assault). There are many obvious reasons why I have a strong disdain for MLM…probably no different than anyone else´s. Fortunately as time moves on, the rising popularity of social media should greatly reduce the effectiveness of MLM 1.0 as a business process, hopefully causing its practitioners to abandon its use.

Top 500 Search Engine Keywords Of The Week
by Robert - Jump directly to this week's list of the top 500 most frequently searched keywords.

Engage Readers with Sketchcasting
by Manoj Jasra - Sketchcasting is basically podcasting with a whiteboard. Rather than publishing content through text or audio, authors express their ideas on a whiteboard (through video). I think this method of conveying thoughts and ideas to your audience is very effective because it will engage readers at a whole new level.

So Many Blogs (comments) and So Little Time (for tracking)
by Stoney G deGeyter - A few weeks ago one of my employees ran across co.mments.com, a free, web based comment tracking tool. It's turned out to be a very nice one-size fits all solution to keeping up with any comments on any blog post, whether I've commented there or not.

Matt Cutts Offers SEO Advice for Wordpress Bloggers
by Jennifer Laycock - Loren Baker serves up some tasty tidbits of advice today from Matt Cutt's talk at the Wordpress Wordcamp this past weekend. You can also find coverage of Matt's session at CNET News, The WordCamp Report and Climb to the Stars.

Building a Personal Brand Online
by Jennifer Laycock - One of the challenges of small businesses and start-up entrepreneurs is finding a way to create a strong personal brand while still getting your work done and your personal life taken care of. This challenge can be especially strong when you're talking about a work at home parent. Much like link building and site optimization, personal brand building requires you to seek out opportunities and to both build and work through relationships.

Of Course Branded Keywords Convert Better!
by Jennifer Laycock - Every now and then I run across an article that purports to share some snippet of undiscovered wisdom. Sometimes these articles are great, other times they make me want to type *headdesk* over and over. There's an article like this over at MediaPost Publications today. While it does have some great info in it, the author seems surprised to find that A.) More traffic doesn't always mean more conversions and B.) Non-branded keywords don't always convert as well as branded keywords. Really? I'd never have guessed.

Survey Your Customers to Find Link Opportunities
by Jennifer Laycock - There's no denying that link building is hard work these days. Even if you have the time and energy to create the content and offers that attract links, it can still be difficult to find the sites you should be working on securing links from. Debra Mastaler offers up a solution today at Search Engine Land: survey your customers to find out what sites they frequent when they are not using yours.

McDonald's Serves Up Citizen Content
by Jennifer Laycock - If you're in the loop when it comes to viral video, you've likely already watched "I'm Into Nuggets Ya'll" on YouTube or Stupid Videos. The catchy rap and beat boxing poking fun at McDonald's "honest, we're hip" approach to marketing made the rounds last year after budding improv comedians Fernando Sosa and Thomas Middleditch filmed the bit in front of a McDonald's near Wrigley Field.

Wal-Mart Gives Consumer Generated Content Another Go
by Jennifer Laycock - Wal-Mart has finally enabled consumer reviews for the products being sold on its web site. The move comes a little more than six months after a Wal-Mart sponsored blog came screeching to a halt amidst a storm of criticism when readers discovered that the blog chronicling the journey of a married couple across the country in an RV was not a work of two fans, but rather of paid professional writers.

What Would You Do with 1,200 Email Addresses?
by Stoney G deGeyter - MIVA is updating their records... and in the process giving all of their contacts access to over 1200 email addresses. Early this morning I received an email from MIVA and there it was, right in front of me, over 1,217 email addresses staring at me in the TO box.

And the Winner is...StatCounter
by Manoj Jasra - Aodhan Cullen, CEO of web analytics provider, StatCounter has taken home the prize of Europe's top Entrepreneur under the age of 25. The young StatCounter CEO edged out other leaders from companies such as JT International and Amsterdam's Wakoopa.
