Search Engine Marketing Articles

Hide and Speak: Develop Very Thick Skin
by Jennifer Laycock - One of the biggest concerns I've heard from businesses that are considering exploring social media and viral marketing is the fear of negative feedback. The bad news is, no matter how carefully you tread, no matter how genuine your involvement is, you may find yourself getting slammed by the very audience you are trying to reach. The good news is, if you go into a social media campaign with honest interest in engaging in a dialogue with your customers, you'll be able to weather the storm.

Your Guide To Google AdWords
by Tracey Simpson - The pay per click advertising arena is a complex place. As a Google AdWords advertiser you compete in an auction every time a keyword prompts your ad to be shown. Unfortunately, many advertisers do not realize how complex that auction is. Find out more about how Google AdWords ranks your ads and how you can establish a profitable strategy for your online business.

10 Blogger Types: The Good, the Bad, and the Sleazy
by Jill Whalen - These past few weeks I've watched how things played out in the blogosphere after breaking the story of Google's new "unavailable_after" tag. I have to say that what I learned was extremely interesting and educational to me!

Which Opportunity Are You Missing?
by Jennifer Laycock - There's a rush to launch a corporate blog these days. There's also a rush to dive into viral marketing. Companies both large and small are working on communicating with their customers through these interesting new marketing tactics. The problem is many of them go after these things with good intentions, but fail to follow through. It's bad enough when a company's blog fails because they simply can't come up with anything interesting to write about. It's worse when a company completely ignores the blogging and viral marketing opportunities that fall right into their laps.

Keyword Research for Organic SEO
by Scott Van Achte - So you have decided to venture out into the world of SEO. The first thing you will need to do is determine the direction of your campaign in relation to the key phrases you are choosing to target. This article will focus on how to find keywords for your organic campaign, as the process is slightly different for PPC.

Hide and Speak - Becoming Part of the Community
by Jennifer Laycock - It's long been understood that people trust the advice and opinions of their friends more than they trust the word of a marketer. The interesting thing about online communities and social media is that they've allowed people to create those "friend" connections with people they've never met in real life.

How NOT To Pitch a Link or a Business Partnership
by Jennifer Laycock - In the last week and a half I've had a handful of messages show up in Outlook that serve as prime examples of how not to approach another business via email. The notes vary in purpose from seeking links to seeking business partnerships to seeking donations. Every last one makes the same exact mistake.

Your ROI is Not the Only ROI That Matters
by Jennifer Laycock - Return on Investment is one of the most talked about concepts in the realm of online marketing. Blogs and discussion forums are devoted to helping businesses learn how to judge the ROI of their search campaigns, their email campaigns, their paid search campaigns and every other type of campaign. What often gets overlooked however, is what your customer's ROI is when they shop with you.

SEO through PPC Eyes
by Stoney G deGeyter - There is a lot more to SEO than often meets the eye, but sometimes the SEO eye isn't enough to make a good optimized page great. While the actual SEO work can be pretty straight forward, it's the additional effort in making the page user-friendly and has the ability to drive visitors to conversions.

Wake Up and Smell the Optimization
by Jennifer Laycock - Just because you think you know a thing or two about search engine optimization and online marketing doesn't mean there isn't a little bit of room to learn. That's what Shari Thurow explains today in her ClickZ article: SEO Epiphanies.

Because That's Where the Customers Are
by Diane Aull - Are you overcomplicating things when it comes to promoting your online business? It's not as hard as you think. In fact, I believe it's really not that different from marketing a brick-and-mortar business. The key is to focus on where your prospective customers can be found.

Top 10 Web Analytics Blogs - July 2007
by Manoj Jasra - Google's Analytics Evangelist, Avinash Kaushik, has just published his quarterly update for the top ten Web Analytics Blogs. Avinash uses Feed Subscribers and Technorati rankings in order to rank the Web Analytics blogs appropriately.

10 Questions with Me
by Jennifer Laycock - I had the chance to do a little email elbow rubbing with Matt Webb or SEO Honolulu earlier this week and the results are now posted as a "10 Questions with..." style interview on his blog. If you ever wondered if I played with Transformers as a child or how I got started in this whole Intrawebs thing, here's your chance to find out.

Local Search Isn't Just About Where You Rank
by Jennifer Laycock - Earlier this week I wrote an article about using Yelp to help market your brick and mortar business. The next day, I had an email from a reader asking if I knew what the most popular local search terms was. I'm thinking that the same reader either emailed Matt McGee, or Matt really does have a tap on my account because he's put together a fantastic post on the subject.

Seven Simple Mistakes That Could Tank Search Marketing
by Jennifer Laycock - Wading into the waters of search engine optimization can be a scary task for small business owners. Even with the right intentions and some good knowledge to back you up, there are some common mistakes that could cost you dearly in the search results. Christine Churchill tackles seven of these problems today in her Small is Beautiful column at Search Engine Land.

AdSense Advertisers Being Forced to Run Pay-Per-Action Ads
by Jennifer Laycock - Back in April, I wrote about Google's new "pay-per-action" ads. The ads were designed to work through Google's existing AdSense publisher network and would have worked in a very similar manner to many popular affiliate programs. The program has been running for a few months now, but I've got t wonder if Google is having a hard time finding publishers to run the ads. Why? Because according to a discussion at the Digital Point forums, they are now forcing some AdSense partners to run these ads.

Discussion Threads of the Week
(Links to search engine forum discussion threads that deal with search engine marketing topics. Each listing provides the topic, the source, and a brief snippet from the discussion.)

Is Google's AdWords Pay Per Action Dead
Search Engine Watch Forums - "I notice there's not much talk about PPA (Pay Per Action) anymore. I tested it briefly a while back and shut down my test because of extremely low volume. If the distribution channel (publishers) don't endorse an ad format then it's dead, since no distribution means advertisers are not interested."

X-Robots-Tag - controlling Googlebot via HTTP headers
Webmaster World - "...this is very useful for non-HTML content such as PDF, Word or plain text files, where you cannot insert meta elements. You can also reduce clutter in the document itself, as well as control indexing via the server configuration rather than editing the files."

Monetizing Your Expert Answers
Cre8asite Forums - "As great as Google is, it really hasn't yet come close to being an effective tool for the average joe seeking the answer to a many types of questions. ...I think that this is because Search Engines still do not always effectively find the right/best/authoritative/complete answer to the searches of many users. Many of these searchers will spend time and brain cells wading through a lot of information in order to glean the answer to their question."

Marketings Sites You Can't Write About
High Rankings Forum - "How do ecommerce websites, that don't have the articles and content, become successful? Is it mostly word of mouth? Good prices, products, customer service and the word spreads?"

Business.com sold for $340 million - $360 million
Webmaster World - "The once slumbering, then lumbering yellowpage/directory giants continue to . . slowly . . somewhat ineffectively . . search for solutions to their declining relevance in the search for business..."

Dangerous Misconception About Biz Insurance
"Sometimes when you get quotes from different insurance companies for the same coverage, the premiums may be very different. For the most part, given like information (value of property, gross receipts, payroll, deductible, coverage’s), companies should be pretty competitive with their rates. But sometimes they can be drastically different."

QuickBooks Online
Has anyone used QuickBooks Online or any other online software applications? If so, what did you think? Are you using online software or sticking with desktop versions, where you install the software onto your computer locally?

Postcard Marketing
"The farm I work for has recently introduced a new line of Organic duck. The target market is high end restaurants ($50/plate and up). In an attempt to boost sales I sent out 300 4x6 postcards... My list is fairly targeted; only restaurants that I picked out by hand. There are only 650 more potential customers in our region so my next mailings really have to work. ...I would appreciate any pointers."
