How do I Leverage On-Site/Behavioral Targeting?
by Manoj Jasra - Behavioral Targeting is the ability to target users based on their behavior on your website (this is one form known as on-site targeting). The concept of behavioral/on site targeting is exactly how business should be done: offer a customized solution to your end users so that they are truly engaged with your website.

The SEO Invasion of Facebook
by Todd Mintz - Recently, many prominent members of the SEO community that I follow and respect all started talking about Facebook simultaneously which told me that I was missing out on an important conversation that I needed to hear and participate in. So, I went back to Facebook, created my page and I now see its enormous potential.

The Strength of Weak Ties and Search
by Gord Hotchkiss - SEO in 2007 means dealing with a number of organizational challenges. Overcoming these challenges will help your organization's online presence and in turn will have a positive impact on lead generation for your business. In the end, an effective SEO campaign can be so rewarding that it in fact pays for itself and then some…

Personalized Search - All's Well or Orwell?
by Scott Buresh - Google is now (and has been for some time) collecting data on individual users, and they are assuming that users will trust them with this data to "Do No Evil," as their famous slogan goes. Only time will tell whether the trust is well-placed, or if people are willing to trust search engines with this type of data at all.

Seth Godin Interview About Squidoo
by Pauline Kerbici - Back in June, Jill and I were front and center at SES Toronto listening to Seth Godin, entrepreneur, best-selling author, and marketing guru. We were very excited when Seth agreed to an interview for High Rankings Advisor readers. He has graciously answered a few questions about Squidoo, where he is founder and original squid.

Purple Flowers Are Not Pink Despite What Google Might Think
by Richard Ball - It's important to recognize that there is no such thing as broad match. Let me say that again: There is no such thing as broad match! Broad match is actually expanded match.

Searching Online, Buying Offline?
by Paul Jahn - It's arguably the premise of local search, and a comScore study with Yahoo gives some interesting insight to the "search online, buy offline" behavior. They examined five major retailers, including JC Penney, national department and apparel stores, and a major office supplies outlet.

Mining Newspapers for Linking Opportunity
by Jennifer Laycock - Somehow, I missed a post last week by Debra Mastaler that outlines some ideas on scoring links from major newspapers. A newspaper link can deliver a nice one-two punch of traffic and search books, offering a nice boost to small businesses looking to increase their visibility online. The good news is that you can get these links without robbing a bank while wearing a shirt with your URL to ensure good coverage. The bad news is...you'll have to work for them.

Google's Gmail A/B Test Over?
by Manoj Jasra - In mid July we mentioned that Google's Gmail was doing some A/B testing to help drive more Gmail registrations. During the test we noticed at least 5 or 6 different types of messaging to help lure new users to sign up. The messaging include phrases such as "Start Fresh," "Sign up for Gmail," "Pick a Name," etc...However we believe the test must be pretty close to completion as we have noticed "Pick a Name" with a dark blue background appearing fairly consistently.

Google Stops Labeling Supplemental Results, Should You Care?
by Jennifer Laycock - There's been a pretty fair amount of buzz this week in the search world about Google's move to stop labeling search results that are part of the supplemental index. While this move will have an impact on search marketing firms who spend morning, noon and night obsessing about each and every page they work on, the average small business owner really doesn't need to worry themselves about it. Why?

Improving Your Google Quality Score
by Jennifer Laycock - Back in the early days of paid search advertising, traditional marketers celebrated the fact that they could finally buy placement on search engine results pages for a flat price. Traditional search engine optimizers sometimes scoffed at those who couldn't (or wouldn't) learn the rules of building a relevant web page. Time, and a variety of paid search system upgrades, have forced both sides to meet in the middle. These days you need to know how to manage both bid prices and relevancy targeting and Search Engine Journal's David Davis is happy to tell you how.

How Does Google's Universal Search Work?
by Jennifer Laycock - Mike Murray and his team at Fathom SEO have put together an entertaining little video aimed at making it a little easier to understand what Google's new universal search is and how it works.

Are You Overlooking Optimization Opportunities?
by Jennifer Laycock - While there's no denying the power of the long tail when it comes to search traffic, the fact remains that a site can really only be properly optimized for a couple of phrases per page. For a small business with an equally small web site, it can be frustrating to feel the limitations of how many phrases they can realistically target. While an obvious (and important) solution is to add more content, Bill Slawski offers up another solution. Optimize those overlooked pages.

5 Mistakes That Can Tank Your PR Pitch to Bloggers
by Jennifer Laycock - Just two days after I wrote a blog post about how NOT to pitch a link or business partnership via email two interesting things happened. The first was that yet another email arrived in my inbox making a significant request of my time and my energy while being addressed while failing to call me by the proper name. The second, was a link I stumbled across on Wendy Piersall's eMoms at Home blog that shared a PR Execs suggestion of how to deal with clueless pitches.

WebTrends Marketing Lab 2 Insight
by Manoj Jasra - Recently I connected with WebTrends' Director of Product Marketing Matt Langie in order to get some more insight on version 2 of their Marketing Lab product. In the latest version, WebTrends introduced two new additions, WebTrends Score and WebTrends Visitor Intelligence. WebTrends Score allows you to assign a score to different visitor interactions on your site and WebTrends Visitor Intelligence takes the 'engagement score' (as well as visitor behavior) and allows you to deliver customized website experiences to your visitors. Here's how it went....

In response to Google Stops Labeling Supplemental Results, Should You Care?, Richard Hearne from Red Cardinal wrote:

I have to say I take a very different position on this - I think Google should fix the problem rather than hide it. The problem isn't people obsessing over supplemental results, the problem (IMO) is the supplemental index.

If I cant tell what pages are in the supplemental then I have virtually no chance of focusing on the pages that truly need the attention in order to get into the primary index. Your point about analytics is indeed a good one, but knowing which index a poorly trafficked page is in is a very powerful starting point WRT improving the pagerank that you're channelling to that page.

My solution to this issue? Dump the supp index altogether. If my page isn't worthy of going into the primary index then leave it be. At lest then I'd know for sure what Google thinks of my pages :)

In response to Are You Overlooking Optimization Opportunities?, Adam Snider of Ink Slinger wrote:

While I'm all for optimizing those secondary pages, I don't know about using unique or unusual titles for them. You have to keep in mind usability issues.

If a user is looking for more information about the company, he's going to look for a page called "About" or "About the Company." If you give the page an unusual name, the customer may not be able to properly navigate the site.
