Search Engine Marketing Articles

The Customer Experience is Not a Commodity
by Jennifer Laycock - Studies show that online shoppers conduct more than half a dozen searches before making a purchase. That means a shopper may visit your site once, twice, or even six times using various search terms before deciding what (and where) they want to buy. If you're the type of web site that sells a product stocked on dozens or even thousands of other sites, how can you compete? Well, price is a factor, but customer experience plays an important role as well.

Search Engine Optimisation-friendly Design in a Web 2.0 World
by Lisa Barone - The Internet has been overtaken by pastels, Web sites are designed using advanced Ajax techniques, navigation is never consistent, and drop down menus are making it harder to navigate a Web site without the use of a mouse. The Internet may be a lot more appealing visually, but it is harder to navigate, especially for Internet users classified as disabled.

SEO is More Important Than Ever
by Ross Dunn - Lately I have noticed more and more writers stating that search engine optimization (SEO) is no longer as important for online success. This spin may make sense to those writers (and their financial goals) as they try to push industry cash flow away from SEO but I disagree wholeheartedly and throughout this posting I will explain why.

Using Google Trends to Research your Brand
by Simon Heseltine - You may think you know everything there is to know about your brand, but what if you don't? What if there's another company or product out there with the same name? What if there is a company with a product that has the same name? If you have a trademark on your name, you'll most likely want to take steps to remedy this. If not, you may want to find out who may take steps against you.

Lessons From Blockbuster: A UVP Worth Writing Home About
by Stoney deGeyter - Blockbuster figured out how to leverage their offline properties for their online rental service, namely the local Blockbuster Video store. Instead of putting your movie back in the mail to be shipped back, you can now take your movie, which you received in the mail, directly to the local Blockbuster store.

Top 500 Search Engine Keywords Of The Week
by Robert - Find this week's hottest search terms.

Tis the Season to Start Optimizing for the Holidays
by Jennifer Laycock - I know, I know, it's just wrong. I firmly believe I shouldn't have to see any Christmas decorations until Thanksgiving, but we all know that Christmas products will be sitting next to Halloween (and even Back-to-School) products this year. In fact, 33% of adults claim they are already shopping for gifts. In his latest "Small is Beautiful" column at Search Engine Land, Matt McGee points out the need to start planning your holiday shopping search campaign is right now.

Headed to Search Engine Strategies in San Jose
by Jennifer Laycock - I'll be heading to San Jose, California next week for Incisive Media's Search Engine Strategies conference. (Along with most of the rest of the industry.) This time around, Search Engine Guide's publisher, the elusive Robert Clough is headed out there as well. I know, I know, I'm as shocked as you are.

A Look at the New Yahoo Local
by Paul Jahn - It was just earlier this week when Yahoo came out with blended search, similar to what Google and Ask have recently done. Now they've gone a step further by updating Yahoo Local. Yahoo can arguably be considered the better local engine already, although this looks like another step in the right direction.

"I think if companies realized the benefits of adding a blog to their website, in terms of helping pagerank and driving traffic to the main site, I think you'd see many more consider blogging. Great article."

Discussion Threads of the Week
(Links to search engine forum discussion threads that deal with search engine marketing topics. Each listing provides the topic, the source, and a brief snippet from the discussion.)

Yahoo Beta Launch of 'Dynamic URL Rewriting' in Site Explorer
Webmaster World - "The new feature provides the ability for site owners to alert Yahoo! of the dynamic parameters in URLs that they'd like Yahoo! to ignore, which we'll then automatically rewrite accordingly. Try this out for all the cases where you'd want to use parameters in your URLs that don't affect the content of your page, but that have other important uses."

Yahoo Reports "Major" Crawl Improvements
Webmaster World - "...we're reducing our crawling machines by a significant amount with this update, so you might have observed a significant reduction in crawl load from us along with fewer machine IP addresses hitting you over the last few days."
