Search Engine Marketing News - 2007-09-06

Hi Everyone,

If you use Movable Type as your blogging software or CMS and you haven't seen the newly released Version 4.0, you are going to love it. We've been doing a lot of back end work on our sites and upgrading to MT 4.0 has been a big part of it. And for you WordPress fans, you may be interested in the Movable Type Open Source Project. I think the competition that WordPress has created for Movable Type really lit a fire under the developers and the end result is a major overall improvement of the software.

Have a great week!

Robert Clough

A Look at Search Engine Strategies Speakers and How Well They Brand Themselves, Part II
by Stoney G deGeyter - Last week I started looking at the branding savvyness of a handful of speakers at Search Engine Strategies, San Jose. There was no way I could go through each and every speaker so I narrowed the list down to those who spoke in sessions I attended. Here I continue through the list (alphabetically) and will provide an additional bonus: me. Yeah, I got my own set of branding issues which I uncovered once I started looking into some of the others here. But before I rip me a new one, let's continue...

Why You Should Embrace the New Social Media News Release
by Jennifer Laycock - The Social Media News Release is designed to encourage a new format for the online press release that does a better job of speaking to media, bloggers and consumers by offering up information in a variety of formats.

When Social Media Attacks the Wrong Person
by Jennifer Laycock - It's no secret that the pack mentality that often powers social media success can also turn into an angry mob complete with virtual pitchforks at the drop of a hat. That's great when the mob is helping to bring social injustice to light, but it's a nightmare when the mob attacks the victim. Unfortunately, the murky waters of Internet gossip and the fuzzy ethics that seem to rule online behavior can make it difficult to know who the victim actually is.

Pay Per Click Ads are the Elevator Pitch of the Web
by Jennifer Laycock - Paid search ads provide one of the toughest challenges for online marketers. You've got a very small space to pitch your product, but since you're paying per click you also need to use that space to pre-qualify visitors. Basically, you've got a handful of seconds to get the buyer before they move on to other listings. So how do you make it work?

Was Stephen Covey a Link Builder at Heart?
by Jennifer Laycock - Probably not, but he sure seems to know the basic principles of solid link building. At least according to Debra Mastaler's latest "Link Week" column. Debra breaks down Covey's popular book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and explains how each habit can be applied to a solid link building strategy.

Turn "Boring" Into Links Link Links
by Debra Mastaler - Link building is like anything else in life, if you approach it with blinders on you'll miss all the good stuff - and look pretty silly to boot. Sometimes you just have to think outside the box and take a...

Does Yahoo Have Issues with Blogspot Blogs?
by Manoj Jasra - Ever since I started blogging I have noticed that Yahoo! has provided abnormally low number of search engines referrals to my blog. Over the last 4 months, the number of Yahoo! referrals in relation to all search engine referrals to...

Top 500 Search Engine Keywords Of The Week

Yo Gabba Gabba Fans Storm the Web (or at least my blog)
by Jennifer Laycock - What's Yo Gabba Gabba you ask? It's a new kids show on Nick Jr. that combines 80's style animation with oddly costumed "monsters," pop media guests and annoyingly catchy songs that will have you waking up at night to the internal sounds of "snacky snack snack snack snack, snacky snack snack SNACK SNACK!" It's apparently also the type of thing that sparks passion on both the "love it" and "hate it" side, as demonstrated by the blog storm generated by a simple post.

The SES Schwag Bag...
by Jennifer Laycock - Everyone knows that half the reason people go to conferences is for the great schwag. I still use my Google bean bag chair, my Yahoo flash drive, my Clicktracks USB wristlet and my Monster Commerce radio controlled car from past...

Readers Respond...

In response to Why You Should Embrace the New Social Media News Release, Lee Odden from TopRank wrote:

"The social media press release format is completely foreign to most journalists. It's a useful way to SEO and socialize press release content, but is by no means replacing traditional press release formats or methods of wire service distribution."

The Value of Links from Blogs and Social Sites
WebmasterWorld - "I've been reading many, many posts about getting link value by posting on blogs or social networking sites. However, when I look at the source code for such sites, I see the links with rel=nofollow attributes. So, where's the value?"

Do I Have Too Much Content?
High Rankings Forums - "Is it possible to have too much content? Should I trim down some of my indexed pages, and focus more on our most popular products? Would this give them more relevance in the eyes of Google?"

Overwhelmed
"...people get frozen before they do anything. They ponder the fees, expenses, taxes, marketing, licenses, insurance...I can't tell you how many people I've talked to over my lifetime who literally get paralysis. Paralysis mentally and they freeze right in front of me. Never to do anything with the ideas they once had. It's a real shame I can tell you that. If I could wave a magic wand I would!! Just do something. Worry about the details later."

Quoted In A National News Story - How Do I Use It?
"The story was not related to the nature of my business or expertise (Web development). The subject of the article was, instead, of interest to small businesses in general. However, the article did mention my name, location, and the fact that I OWN a Web development business (although not my business's name, unfortunately). I am a one-person shop, so even having my name mentioned is pretty cool and good for advertising. Is there a creative way I can toot my horn here or utilize this unexpected gem? Is it even relevant, or should I even consider it a marketing opportunity? What might be the impact of getting this kind of indirect publicity?"
