It's a popular refrain with politicians these days. Focus on the children and how you can help them...prove that you love them more and voters will flock to you. Well, what if search engines started playing the same game in the battle for searchers?
Apparently, Google's soaking up a little bit of the limelight for "saving" a baby from unnecessary surgery. I know it sounds far-fetched, but the story gets even better. This isn't just the story of some parent running some in-depth queries for their chronically ill child, this was a dad, in a hospital, using a cell phone to find some research via Google.
"Armed with only a cell phone - and a very low battery - I was able to Google [hemoglobin "premature infant"] and found a medical journal article claiming that it's perfectly normal for preemies to have their hemoglobin levels drop to 7 between the first and third months of life, and apparently this is especially true with twins." He showed the mobile screen citing this fact to the neonatalogists, who went off to research the issue for a couple of hours.
The happy ending was that the baby did not end up needing the surgery and everything turned out great. Talk about amazing public relations for Google! Find out more on Google's blog.
