From the early days when it was still called "search engine submission" to the modern mix of techniques that has come to be known as search engine marketing, the world of web site promotion has changed a lot over the past decade.

Back in those days, Search Engine Guide was nothing more than a giant directory of places to submit your site to and AltaVista was one of the engines where you simply HAD to be listed. (and *I* hadn't even graduated high school yet, but that's a whole other story...)
