The ZDnet research team has the latest Nielsen//NetRatings list of the top Internet sites for the month of September. There were few surprises as Yahoo! took the top spot with just under 100 million viewers. Yahoo! was followed up by Microsoft, MSN, Google and AOL respectively. Ebay, MapQuest, Real.com, Amazon and the Weather Channel round out the top ten.

Unique visitors aside, AOL, Yahoo! and Ebay were the biggest winners when it comes to staying power with users. Each of the three sites averaged over two hours per user of time spent on the site, with AOL logging an impressive six hours, twelve minutes. That spells good news for sites that rely on advertising revenue.

The latest data also held good news for a popular user-generated content site. Wikipedia now leads the charge as the fastest growing educational reference site. The volunteer writer based online encyclopedia attracted nearly 13 million unique users last month, a 289 percent year-over-year growth.

"The growth of educational reference sites stem from the basic offerings of the Internet – free and quick access to information," said Gerry Davidson, senior media analyst, Nielsen//NetRatings. "The 'wiki' phenomenon offers the added element of user interaction, which appeals to college-educated Web users' sense of altruism by allowing them to add or correct online content."
