After speculation popped up yesterday about a new subdomain that had appeared on the Google site, it seems that a sight briefly appeared and then vanished again. It appears that the new Google Base program will be Google's attempt to open up a giant public database that allows folks to list everything from their high school term papers to their Elvis plate collection that's for sale.

Screen shots have been posted at Flickr by Dirson. A description of the service from one of the shots:

Google Base is Google’s database into which you can add all types of content. We’ll host your content and make it searchable online for free.

Examples of items you can find in Google Base:

• Description of your party planning service
• Articles on current events from your website
• Listing of your used car for sale
• Database of protein structures

According to Dirson's blog:

This new tool will be introduced during the 'Google Zeitgeist'05 Partner Forum' to be held today at Google HQ in California.

Google wants to become a meeting-point where users share their information, instead of crawling it with their robots by accessing webpages.

Props to Google Blogoscoped for spotting this.
