AOL Search announced the top queries for the year 2005 this morning in a press release that outlined the topics that received the most interest on AOL Search, AOL's portal and the AOL service itself. As it turns out, AOL users are obsessed with the lottery.

The top three searches across AOL properties? The lottery, horoscopes and tatoos. AOL also tracked the appearance of new searches in 2005 for Sudoku, a popular puzzle game and the musical event Live 8.

"Millions of people search online through AOL Search for a wide spectrum of things, but there are those terms that are looked-up more frequently than others," said Jim Riesenbach, senior vice president of AOL Search and Directional Media. "From news and people that grab attention to popular products and common queries, the most searched for topics online during 2005 are a reflection of what was top of mind or what people wanted to find more information about."

Popular because she's popular star Paris Hilton bypassed Britney Spears as the most searched for celebrity, followed by Oprah, Jessica Simpson, Britney and Lindsay Lohan.

The AOL® Video Search service tracked 50 Cent as the most searched for musical artist while Natalee Holloway's disapearance was the most searched for news item.
