Yesterday, America Online announced that it would be selling a 5% stake to Google in a deal that will see $1 billion changing hands and a door swingly soundly shut on the knocking hand of Microsoft.

The deal comes after Time Warner, AOL's corporate parent, put an end to months of discussion with Microsoft. Microsoft had hoped to secure its own relationship with AOL in order to see its' own paid search ads replacing Google's AdWords on the America Online network of sites.

The new deal will spawn several changes including the appearance of graphical banner ads on some of Google's services and the linking of Google Talk with AOL's popular instant messenger service.

News coverage on the deal abounds. You can read more at Forbes, ClickZ and Search Engine Watch.
