Teddie Cowell over at the Search Engine War blog has a blog post that points to the Google API developers page as "proof" that a Google endorsed rank checker may be on the horizon. While no one in the industry doubts that rank checking is on the way out, this is still an intersting find.
He quotes the following from the guide:
For example, you could use this function to perform dynamic retrieval of RSS or Atom feeds and write sophisticated interfaces for viewing them. Or, you could write a module that fetches results from a search engine for a given query, and then lets you know if there is a change in the order of the top results.
More Google modules available.
