One of the things I look forward to when holidays are coming up is the creative way that Google celebrates these days with an adaptation of their logo. That's why I was dissapointed yesterday to find the standard Google logo gracing the pages of the site. I hadn't realized until this year that Google never does a special logo for Memorial Day.

I suppose it's possible that Google now views itself as such a global force that they shouldn't celebrate U.S. only holidays...but they did create logos for Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July. They even did a special election day logo in 2004.

Some bloggers are praising the decision by deriding the fact that anyone celebrates a holiday aimed to memorialize battles, or the soldiers that fought and died in them. Others are calling Google un-American and decrying their lack of patriotism.

I'm in the camp that firmly believes that Google is well within their rights to highlight and celebrate whatever they want to...the same way that I'm of the right to be dissapointed that they glossed over Memorial Day.
