Being asked to be a guest blogger at Search Engine Guide, I really didn't get any rules or guidelines – other than - "make three posts in one day." Yeah – the three post thing was a surprise until I got an email reminding me that today was the day. Because I have no guidelines about my being a guest blogger, I guess I can do what I want. So...
One of the things that clients always want is more traffic – to that I offer this list of 50 reasons why people aren't using your website. I'll specifically note a few that I like;
2. Because it solves a problem they don't have
15. Because it's not as exciting as Vegas
24. Because you don't tell them what you want them to do
34. Because it doesn't work like yahoo or amazon or ebay
42. Because it says "tags" or "rss" and they feel stupid
50. Because they just don't want to read what you want them to read
Great list - it really brings some sense into website marketing when you realize that not everyone uses the internet, and not everyone needs what you're selling. However, there are some real common-sense principles involved, like #24 (which would be #1 on my list).
On another, non-related note, CBS is going to "eggvertising" to promote their new fall line-up. (Link to NYTimes, bypass the ads)
Color me excited.
Advertising printed on my food. I can handle the occasional Dole sticker on my bananas, but it's not something I really want to see.
I guess their research department is proud of themselves because they realized that they could get potentially four impressions – the first of which when you open the box to check for broken eggs. Now, I don’t know about you – but isn’t this a little too much advertising in our lives?
I think I would put those eggs back and get some normal ones, "Excuse me – do you have Ad-Free eggs?"
Brand Autopsy author, John Moore comments: "Let's hope CBS saved some of its marketing dollars to spend on making their television shows worth talking about because if the only thing worth talking about is their 'On-Egg Messaging' ... then CBS's Fall Schedule is in trouble."
Exactly – I'm really not a big fan of network TV. A big reason is the amount of ads I am forced to watch, or at least fast-forward through . . .
