Last week I had the pleasure of meeting Cameron Olthuis, who spoke on the Link Baiting and Viral Marketing panel with Rand Fishkin, Chris Boggs and I. Cameron had some very interesting things to say and I've since discovered that those interesting tidbits are also available on his blog. This week, Cameron gives a great overview of Social Media Optimization including the easy to understand concept that social media is "pull marketing" rather than "push marketing."

Cameron pulls together some good bits of advice from several different bloggers to come up with a handful of "rules" for good social media optimization.

1 Increase Your Linkability
2 Make Tagging and Bookmarking easy
3 Reward Inbound Links
4 Help Your Content Travel
5 Encourage the Mashup

also...

1 Be a User Resource, Even if it Doesn't Help You
2 Reward Helpful and Valuable Users

One thing that you need to remember while reading this, or other similar articles... Don't get caught up in this idea of Marketing 2.0 buzz... if you think about it carefully, all of these "new" techniques and all of the sudden focus on things like link baiting, social media, viral marketing and online reputation management are actually old school marketing tactics with sexy new names.

As I pointed out in my How to Win Links and Influence People series...what we're really seeing is sort of a full circle where young internet marketers are realizing that all the "goody-two shoes" ideas of their grandparents actually have some good common sense practicality behind them. What this all boils down to is providing a good service, good information and good personality.
