Debra Mastaler knows links. Seriously...she's awesome at this linking stuff and she's got some great, sage advice that she shares with anyone willing to read it. This week, you need to go read her post called "There's more than one way to skin a link." In it, she shares the absolutely astonishing ideas of "picking up the phone" and "sending actual real mail" as part of her link building tactics. Pick yourself back up off the floor, this is worth reading.
Debra says...
If I'm buying links for a site or setting up an incentive program, I usually start out with an email and then depending on the site, pick up the phone and call. Since I look for organizations and associations when I link, I don't have to make many calls to net a lot of links.
If I'm working a larger niche or customer lists, I'll email and then follow-up with post cards. Yeah, that's right, snail mail post cards. They're an effective low cost way to get people's attention, reinforce the email previously sent and lend some credibility to it.
Ok, before you gasp and think "oh man! you mean I might have to do more than just shoot off a quick email?!" consider what I keep saying over and over and over and over (and over?) again... Link building is relationship building. Good links are like anything else good in life, they take a little time and a little effort. Great links are like anything else great in life, they take a little more time and a little more effort.
This should not surprise you.
