Though RSS is taking off as one of the biggest things to hit web publishing since the blog itself, many small business owners are still a bit confused as to what RSS actually is and how it works. That's why I think there's so much value in a post made by Stephanie Quilao over at the "Back in skinny jeans" blog. Using what she calls the "Oprah definition," Stephanie does a great job of breaking RSS down into something even your mom could understand.

The technical acronym for RSS is "Really Simple Syndication", an XML format that was created to syndicate news, and be a means to share content on the web. Now, to geeks and techies that means something special, but to everyday folks like you and me, what comes to mind is, "Uh, I don't get it?"
So, to make RSS much easier to understand, in Oprah speak, RSS stands for: I'm "Ready for Some Stories". It is a way online for you to get a quick list of the latest story headlines from all your favorite websites and blogs all in one place. How cool is that?
Stephanie goes on to explain how to subscribe to RSS feeds, how to use RSS readers and even how to integrate RSS into your bookmarks. It's a super simple read and should finally clear up RSS confusion for anyone that finds themselves a bit confused by the idea.
