Jennifer Laycock, editor of
Search Engine Guide, recently talked with Michael McDerment, the President and CEO of
FreshBooks about how search engines can help attract visitors to your web site. This podcast is call number 6 in a series of 9 teleseminars. This podcast, titled "Introduction to Building Traffic to Your Website", and is a good overall view of the fundamentals of search engine optimization.
In the first few minutes, they talk about what has changed the most in search in the last year. They go on to give a definition of organic marketing and how optimizing a website for organic search “levels the playing field” between big and small businesses. It gives the small business an opportunity to compete online with larger businesses. Many on-site factors are discussed, such as how to structure your web pages and the steps to follow to find your keyword phrases and how to “rank” for those keyword phrases. The talk about how PPC (pay per click) advertising is a good way to test your keywords before optimizing your site for the organic search results.
Off-site factors such as link building, link quality, and “Google bombing” is discussed, and they go on to talk about WordTracker and Keyword Discovery, two tools for finding additional keywords and keywords related to your site’s products and services. More link building will be discussed in the next teleseminar, teleseminar number 7.
